Description
Francesca Lucchini is a witch of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, originating from the Duchy of Romagna and affiliated with the Romagna Air Force. Born on December 24, she is the youngest soldier of the unit at the age of twelve, holding the rank of Pilot Officer. Her magical abilities manifest with the ears and tail of a black leopard, her chosen familiar. Physically, she is a petite, flat-chested girl with black hair styled into twintails and green eyes.
Unlike many of her comrades, Francesca's past is not marked by personal tragedy or loss. She joined the Strike Witches out of a sincere sense of duty and a protective desire to ensure that no harm would ever come to her beloved homeland of Romagna and its rich cultural legacy. Despite these noble motivations, she consistently acts in a manner typical of a carefree twelve-year-old. Francesca is often childish, self-indulgent, and possesses an energetic personality that masks a profound laziness. She habitually shirks training and other duties in favor of having fun around the base, napping, or eating, as food is always a top priority for her. Sleeping is a favorite pastime, and she has a particular fondness for napping in high places such as trees or on beams, having constructed several hideouts around the base with the permission of her commanding officer. She hates the cold and is generally unafraid of most things, except for the unit's Wing Commander and Squadron Leader. Her tendency to speak in a sing-song tone and her disregard for rules can make her appear rude, yet she is fundamentally a good-natured girl who plays an important role in preventing the unit from losing heart.
A notable and recurring quirk of Francesca's personality is her obsession with breasts. She is almost always seen cuddled up in the bosom of her best friend, Charlotte E. Yeager, whom she refers to as Shirley. This habit, which she is permitted to indulge with Charlotte, has in the past gotten her into trouble when she attempts to "investigate" other recruits.
In combat, Francesca's demeanor shifts dramatically. She displays a true talent and passion for flying, and her abilities in the air are considered unmatched within the 501st. She is a child prodigy whose marksmanship is of a master class, and she is a genius when it comes to dogfighting and evasive maneuvers. Her inherent magical ability is known as Sunlight Strike, which allows her to directly concentrate, manipulate, and discharge magical energy in the form of light and heat. This power is considerable; she can stack multiple shields and superheat them with her magic to penetrate Neuroi structures, creating nearly unbreakable defensive barriers. Working in tandem with her best friend Charlotte, who can throw her at high speed, Francesca can focus her magic into a single point in front of her for a devastatingly powerful burst attack against an enemy.
Francesca's key relationship is with Charlotte E. Yeager. They are best friends whose abilities complement each other perfectly, and they work together exceptionally well in a two-witch formation. Their bond is often viewed as being akin to a mother-daughter relationship, and Charlotte's casual and easygoing nature helps to temper Francesca's more problematic behaviors. She also shares a good relationship with other members of the 501st, such as Yoshika Miyafuji, whose cooking Francesca greatly appreciates, and Lynette Bishop. Despite her own laziness, her carefree spirit and talent make her an integral part of the team during serious operations.
While she may appear to simply be a lazy and carefree child, Francesca has undergone development that reveals deeper layers. She was a problematic recruit with a tendency for reckless, aggressive assaults, even crashing and destroying her own Striker Unit. Her deep attachment to her mother, who raised her on the family vineyard, is so strong that she always carries a picture of her. Prior to joining the 501st, she would often escape her unit to return home. After being assigned to the 501st Joint Fighter Wing in hopes of improving her behavior, she calmed down significantly under the care of Charlotte Yeager, allowing her to finally demonstrate her true prodigious abilities. In moments where her homeland or personal memories are threatened, such as during the mission to retake the island of Delos, a place of precious family memories for her, her usual childish demeanor gives way to a surprisingly serious, grim, and even single-minded determination to protect.
