Description
Kobayashi, commonly called Koba-sen or Mr. K, is a teacher at Hinokuni Junior High School and a candidate to become a king in the Celestial World. He serves as Ueki’s homeroom teacher and is the god candidate who selects Ueki for the tournament, granting him the ability to transform garbage into trees. His character is defined by a contrast between a generally easygoing, forgetful, and friendly demeanor and a capacity for seriousness when circumstances call for it. A powerful sense of justice guides most of his actions and has long been a source of inspiration for Ueki; it was Kobayashi who saved Ueki from a fall years earlier, impressing upon him the importance of protecting others.
Kobayashi’s primary motivation is to see justice upheld and to help Ueki grow into a person worthy of the power he has been given. He carefully studies Ueki not merely as a combatant but as a person, evaluating his moral character throughout the tournament. In the story, Kobayashi acts as both mentor and role model for Ueki, offering guidance and support. His commitment to his principles leads him to break a crucial rule by intervening to save Ueki during a battle against Robert Haydn, a transgression that results in his being sent to Hell. Even from that exile, he continues to aid Ueki and later becomes the god candidate for Ai Mori, further extending his role in the conflict.
Kobayashi’s development centers on his willingness to sacrifice his own well‑being for his beliefs and for those he cares about. His fall from grace is not a defeat but a demonstration of his integrity, and he remains a steadfast ally from the sidelines. Key relationships include his close bond with Ueki, which evolves from teacher‑student to a deeper, almost fatherly connection, and later his partnership with Ai Mori as her god candidate. In terms of abilities, Kobayashi does not wield powers in direct combat; his fundamental ability as a god candidate is to bestow a single power on a chosen human, which he uses to grant Ueki the ability to turn trash into trees. He also possesses extensive knowledge of the celestial tournament’s rules and structure, knowledge he passes on to Ueki and his allies.
