Description
Koba-sen is a teacher at Hinokuni Junior High School and the homeroom instructor of the main character, Kosuke Ueki. He is one of one hundred Celestial King Candidates selected to participate in a competition to determine who will become the next god. In this role, he chooses Ueki to be his power user and grants him the ability to turn trash into trees. Koba-sen spent time carefully observing Ueki to decide whether he was worthy of participating in the tournament.
Koba-sen generally presents as a laid-back, forgetful, and friendly man, but he becomes serious when the situation demands it. His most defining trait is a strong sense of justice, a quality that inspired Ueki when Koba-sen saved him from falling off a building long before the competition began. This event made Koba-sen a mentor and role model for Ueki. Though he does not always openly display his emotions, he cares deeply for his protégé and takes genuine interest in how far Ueki will take his sense of justice.
His primary motivation is not personal ambition to become god but rather a desire to see Ueki grow and uphold justice. This selflessness is shown when he sacrifices himself by intervening in Ueki’s first battle against Robert Haydn. Because the rules forbid god candidates from directly assisting their power users, Koba-sen is sent to Hell as punishment. This event drives a major subplot in which Ueki and his allies later work to rescue him. After his return, Koba-sen becomes the god candidate for Ai Mori, Ueki’s friend and eventual teammate.
In terms of notable abilities, Koba-sen possesses the power that all Celestial King Candidates have: the capacity to grant a special ability to a chosen human. The ability he gave Ueki is the power to change garbage into trees. Beyond this, as a celestial being himself, he likely has his own innate powers, though these are not prominently displayed in the main narrative.
Throughout the story, Koba-sen functions primarily as a supporting figure and moral compass for Ueki. His relationship with Ueki evolves from that of teacher and student to one of mutual respect and loyalty, with Ueki risking everything to save him from Hell. His development highlights the themes of sacrifice, mentorship, and the enduring impact of a just example.
