Description
Fou Lafine is a character from the anime B't X, serving as a priest within the Machine Empire and holding the distinguished rank of one of the four legendary Spirit Generals. His designated direction is the South, and he is the chosen donor and partner to the phoenix-like B't named Je t'aime.
Fou's background is marked by tragedy. He grew up in the war-ravaged city of Sodom, where he was orphaned at a young age after his parents were killed in a bombing. This loss forged him into a self-reliant and aloof teenager, with only a girl named Lily and her brother Quattro as close friends. Despite his harsh circumstances, he displayed remarkable musical talent from a young age, becoming a virtuoso on the violin, organ, and harmonica. He would perform in churches, but primarily for food, and he harbored a deep disdain for organized religion, viewing it as passive and ineffective in stopping the war that had destroyed his home.
After Lily’s death, Fou and Quattro were taken in by soldiers of the Machine Empire. Unaware that the Empire itself had orchestrated the destruction of Sodom, Fou underwent training alongside other orphans, including Ron and Karen. He came to believe in the Machine Emperor’s mission of establishing "true peace." His skills and strategic mind eventually led him to become one of the revered Spirit Generals and a major in the Empire's military. However, his loyalty became questionable when he deliberately allowed his fellow general, Karen, to defect from the Empire, an act that resulted in his demotion to the rank of lieutenant. Despite his military role, Fou runs a church on the outskirts of the Empire where he provides refuge and care for orphaned children, demonstrating a compassionate side that contrasts with his duties as a soldier.
His personality is a study in contradictions. While he is a devoutly religious man who often recites verses from the Bible, his faith was born from a place of initial hatred and is expressed through direct action, such as protecting the vulnerable. He is a capable and agile fighter, though not as martially skilled as the Spirit General Ron. He is also an excellent tactician. Throughout his journey, he carries a pendant given to him by Lily, a symbol of his enduring connection to his lost past.
Fou's role in the story is initially that of an antagonist, yet one whose moral ambiguity sets him apart. He confronts the protagonist, Teppei Takamiya, and defeats him with relative ease. Over time, his loyalties shift more decisively against the Machine Empire. A key relationship is his bitter conflict with Quattro, who resents Fou for his harsh dismissal of religion at Lily's deathbed. This confrontation forces Fou to reckon with his past, and while he initially considers letting Quattro kill him as a form of atonement, he ultimately moves past this impulse to focus on protecting the orphans under his care and fighting against the Empire's injustices.
Fou possesses several notable abilities in combat. His primary weapon is the Funeral Bow, which is also the bow he uses to play his violin. This weapon can emit powerful arcs of high-voltage electricity, enough to reduce a human to ashes. When he plays a specific song on his violin in synchronization with his B't Je t'aime, he can perform the Fortune Symphonic. This technique amplifies Je t'aime's Deadly Carol sonic attack, allowing Fou to connect psychologically and emotionally with anyone who hears the music, putting them into a trance. Je t'aime itself, a mechanical bird of great power, has the ability to be resurrected into a more powerful "true phoenix" form when Fou plays the song of the angels.
