Description
Mitchell de Quevedo, known in the original Japanese as Koutaro Takamiya, is the older brother of Teppei Takamiya. He is a brilliant scientist specializing in robotics and artificial intelligence, having achieved the status of a professor in robotics at the age of sixteen. His expertise lies in robotic biology and AI technology, and he gained international recognition for his thesis on AI robot technology.
Born on Kamui Island, Mitchell grew up alongside his younger brother Teppei after the death of their parents, with the two being raised by their uncle. From a young age, Mitchell displayed exceptional aptitude in science and engineering, eventually leaving the island to study robotics in Germany. His groundbreaking research made him a target for the Machine Empire, which kidnapped him during a scientific conference in Mechatopia, China, where he was about to announce his latest breakthrough. The kidnapping set the entire story in motion, as his brother Teppei set out to rescue him.
Mitchell’s personality is that of a reserved and highly intellectual individual. He is calm under pressure and adapts to his captivity by cooperating with his captors when necessary, while secretly looking for ways to survive and protect his brother from a distance. His primary motivation is his deep bond with Teppei; he cares deeply for his younger brother and feels responsible for the danger that has come to him. Despite his own peril, he often worries more about Teppei’s safety than his own.
In the story, Mitchell serves as a captive within the Machine Empire, forced to use his genius to help the Empire’s agents, particularly Major Aramis, solve a critical problem: the uncontrollable evolution of the ultimate B’t known as Raffaello. While not a combatant, his scientific knowledge becomes vital to understanding the nature of the B’t creatures and the threats facing both the Empire and the outside world. His role is largely that of a catalyst and a source of information, with his rescue being the central goal of the protagonist’s journey.
Mitchell’s key relationship is with his brother Teppei, which is defined by mutual love and sacrifice. He also interacts with the Empire’s officers, with whom he maintains a tense, often cooperative but wary dynamic. His development throughout the series is subtle: he moves from a passive victim to a more active participant in the fight against the Empire, using his intellect to help sabotage or slow down the enemy’s plans when possible. He also grows in his understanding of the deeper conspiracy behind the Machine Empire and the true nature of the B’t.
Notable abilities include his extraordinary intellect in robotic engineering and AI, allowing him to understand and even manipulate the inner workings of B’ts and other advanced machinery. He also possesses a strong emotional resilience, enabling him to withstand the psychological strain of captivity and the moral compromises required to survive. In terms of physical abilities, he is not a fighter and relies entirely on his mind and the protection of others, especially his brother.
