Description
Liang Qi, also referred to as Liang-Chi, is a major antagonist in the anime series CANAAN. She serves as one of the top lieutenants within the terrorist organization Snake, which is led by the formidable assassin Alphard Al Sheya. Liang Qi has been at Alphards side since Alphard and their mutual mentor Siam parted ways, and she affectionately refers to Alphard as an elder sister.

In terms of background, Liang Qi is first encountered as a cool and composed operative, but this exterior conceals a deeply obsessive and merciless nature. Her personality is defined by an intense admiration and idolization of Alphard that borders on romantic love. She craves Alphards attention and approval above all else, and she becomes deeply frustrated and resentful when Alphard does not reciprocate these feelings, instead often ignoring or even ridiculing her. Liang Qi sees the protagonist Canaan as a direct threat to her bond with Alphard, because Alphard takes a special interest in observing Canans reactions to Snakes various plots. Liang Qi therefore makes the elimination of Canaan her primary goal, believing that by killing her rival she can win back Alphards full attention.

Her motivations are driven entirely by this unrequited devotion. After Alphard leaves Liang Qi to her own devices following the attack on the Shanghai International Conference Hall, Liang Qi becomes increasingly unbalanced and desperate. She relocates to the Factory, a remote village in Xinjiang, China that has been converted into a research complex where Snake and previously the CIA conducted experiments on the Ua virus. There, she attempts to regain Alphards focus by taking an untested experimental drug designed to artificially induce synesthesia. The drug causes her immense physical pain and transforms her appearance, giving her grayish-blond hair and bloodshot eyes. This new look makes her superficially resemble Canaan, the very person she hates and vows to kill, and this irony drives her further into insanity.

Key relationships in the story include her connection to Alphard, which is the central axis of her character; her fraught dynamic with Canaan, whom she views as a rival and obsession; and her relationship with Cummings, a fellow mercenary who works alongside her in Snake. Cummings genuinely loves Liang Qi and pleads with her to leave the Factory with him. However, she mockingly rejects his concern. In the end, Cummings fatally shoots Liang Qi to end her suffering from the drugs effects. As she dies, she mistakes her own reflection in a mirror for Canaan and believes that Cummings has killed her rival, offering her a moment of deluded peace. Her death prompts Alphard to remark that love is a troublesome thing.

In terms of development, Liang Qi begins as a seemingly controlled and efficient subordinate but progressively unravels, revealing a fanatical and emotionally volatile core. Her arc is a tragic spiral driven by unreturned affection and a desperate need for validation. Regarding notable abilities, Liang Qi is a skilled combatant and operative, capable of leading missions and fighting alongside Snakes other agents. She does not possess natural synesthesia, unlike Canaan and Alphard, and her attempt to acquire it artificially fails catastrophically. Her most defining trait is not a supernatural power but her unwavering, self-destructive loyalty and obsession, which ultimately consumes her.
