Description
Chiara Farina is a central character in the anime series Elementhunters. She is a twelve-year-old girl born in August 2077, though other sources list her birth date as April 8, 2077. Her family situation is somewhat unusual, as her mother works as an actress and lives apart from the family, while her father is a knitter and unemployed for a period. As a result, Chiara takes on much of the responsibility for managing the household and its chores.
Chiara has a vibrant and forceful personality. She is best described as active, competitive, and strong-willed, often coming across as impatient and even reckless in her actions. She frequently clashes with her teammates, Ren and Homi, whom she often finds childish, and she is typically the first to rush into a mission. Beneath this tough exterior, however, Chiara possesses a more sensitive and caring side. Her drive to be the best and her insistence on taking the lead are not born solely from arrogance but from a deep-seated desire to prove herself and gain the recognition of others. Her characteristic catchphrase, which she declares often, is "I am justice!".
Within the story, Chiara is a member of the Earth Elemental Hunter team, a group of young protagonists chosen for their ability to access the parallel world of Nega Earth to retrieve disappearing chemical elements. On her team, she acts as the self-proclaimed leader, often taking charge of situations and pressing her teammates, Ren Karas and Homi Nandie, into action. Despite her claims to leadership, she is balanced by the physical strength of Ren, who is like the team's muscle, and the strategic mind of Homi, who serves as its bookworm. The three share a foundational backstory; they became close friends after a dangerous incident involving a collapsing building. Chiara and Ren had been secretly caring for the same lost puppy, and when a structure began to fall on them, the reclusive Homi intervened to save them, an event that helped solidify their friendship and bring Homi back to school.
Chiara's most significant personal relationships develop over the course of the series. She initially finds herself at odds with the similarly headstrong character, Rodney Ford, and their interactions are often marked by arguing and conflict. However, this friction gradually evolves into mutual respect and romantic feelings. Chiara becomes the target of Rodney's affection, culminating in an anguished confession from him when he fears for her safety. She eventually reciprocates these feelings, and by the end of the series, Chiara and Rodney are an established couple, with the final episode showing Rodney arriving to pick her up for a date. Her character also shows a more subtle romantic awareness earlier on, as she is noted to be unconsciously jealous of another character, Ally Connelly, for her interactions with Ren.
In terms of abilities and other traits, Chiara is academically successful, consistently achieving better grades than her teammate Ren. She also has an interest in fashion, which is noted as a hobby. Conversely, she has a well-defined dislike for mollusks, such as octopuses. Throughout the series, Chiara's role evolves from a simply headstrong and occasionally brash girl into a more nuanced individual whose drive for achievement is tempered by her loyalty to her friends and her developing emotional maturity, particularly in her relationship with Rodney.
