TV-Series
Description
Adjutant Teen Gould is a fourteen-year-old boy who serves as a lieutenant and the adjutant on the strategic nuclear submarine Ulysses. He is the twin brother of Keel, the series' protagonist, and was separated from him during a traumatic event in early childhood.
Teen and Keel originally lived with their parents on a space station. When it was discovered that the station would fall from orbit and burn up in the atmosphere, their mother took the only shuttle to escape with Teen and Keel. Their father remained behind to continue his work. During the descent, the shuttle caught fire, and Teen was thrown into the ocean, an event that instilled in him a deep fear of water known as aquaphobia. While Keel was adopted by Aoi, the Secretary-General of the New United Nations, Teen was found adrift and rescued by Captain Gould, the commander of the Ulysses. Captain Gould became a foster father to Teen, and the submarine's crew became his surrogate family.
Raised in this military environment from a very young age, Teen was brought up to be a soldier. This upbringing is reflected in his personality, which stands in stark contrast to that of his carefree and lively twin brother. Teen is consistently calm, collected, and reserved. Having been conditioned to suppress his emotions, he rarely displays his true feelings and carries out his duties with a high degree of professionalism and seriousness. Despite his composed exterior, he possesses a strong sense of duty and a deep-seated loyalty to Captain Gould, who saved his life and gave him a purpose.
Teen’s primary motivation is tied to his loyalty to Captain Gould and the mission of the Ulysses, which seeks to bring peace to a post-apocalyptic world through overwhelming military force. He is trusted with crucial tasks, most notably being chosen to personally deliver Captain Gould's declaration of war to the New United Nations. This mission brings him to the city of Yabitsu, where he is reunited with his brother Keel for the first time since their childhood separation.
His role in the story is pivotal as a direct agent of Captain Gould's plans and as a key connection for Keel. During the attack on Yabitsu, Teen encounters Keel and a pregnant sixteen-year-old girl named Isla. In a moment that reveals his underlying compassion, Teen helps Isla deliver her baby in the midst of the chaos. He advises Keel to flee the city and seek sanctuary aboard the Ulysses, giving him a military insignia to use as identification. This act directly propels Keel and Isla into the central conflict of the series. Before Teen can return to his vessel, he is captured by the forces of the New United Nations.
The most significant relationship in Teen's life is with Captain Gould, who he views as a surrogate father. His entire identity as a soldier is shaped by this bond. The other crucial relationship is with his estranged twin, Keel. Though they were separated for years and have become very different people, their reunion forces Teen to confront his past. While he initially appears distant, his actions in helping Keel and Isla demonstrate that his familial connection remains important to him.
Throughout the series, Teen’s development involves navigating the conflicting loyalties between his duty to Captain Gould and the re-emergence of his bond with his biological brother. His arc shows a young man who has buried his past and personal fears under a soldier's discipline, slowly revealing the more vulnerable person beneath when faced with his own history.
In terms of abilities, Teen is a skilled officer and soldier, a direct result of his upbringing on a military submarine. Notably, he and his brother Keel are among the very few people in this post-catastrophe world who still possess the knowledge and ability to use computers, a rare and valuable skill. Despite his competence, he struggles with aquaphobia, a lasting psychological scar from the shuttle accident that nearly took his life as a child.
