Description
Mayu Miyuki is the only daughter of wealthy parents who own and run a trading company called Miyuki Trading, which deals primarily in clothing. She is born into the Miyuki Silk Company family. Her parents are frequently traveling the world for business, leaving Mayu feeling lonely despite their material provisions. When Mayu is twelve years old, her parents are about to miss her birthday due to business meetings, and they give her a teddy bear as a customary consolation. Rejecting the gift, Mayu encounters a sixteen-year-old Kaoru Hanabishi at a party, who reminds her that she is fortunate to have parents who care for her, as having no parents at all is far worse. This comfort instantly endears Kaoru to her, and she keeps the teddy bear along with her collection of stuffed animals as a way to stave off loneliness.
Mayu is something of a prodigy. She studies abroad in England and attends high school at prestigious institutions there, becoming an accomplished pianist in the process. Upon returning to Japan, she enrolls as a first-year student at Meiritsu University, the same college Kaoru attends. Her father chooses the university for her, and she initially thinks poorly of it, but the coincidence places her near Kaoru. She is sixteen years old, has long purple hair, and a slim build.
In terms of personality, Mayu is playful, flirtatious, and outwardly confident. Because of her luxurious upbringing, she can sometimes come across as snobby or entitled, but this demeanor softens considerably when she is around Kaoru. She is also academically gifted and a piano prodigy. Her primary motivation is her deep, long-standing affection for Kaoru, which began in childhood. She pursues him aggressively and openly, in contrast to the more reserved nature of Aoi Sakuraba and the more combative rivalry of Tina Foster. Mayu frequently argues with Tina over their mutual feelings for Kaoru, but unlike Tina, Mayu is unabashed about expressing her love. She is unaware that her feelings are unreciprocated; Kaoru values her as a friend but does not return her romantic interest.
Throughout the series, Mayu serves as a supporting character and a rival love interest who adds tension and contrast to the central relationship between Kaoru and Aoi. Her presence helps highlight Aoi’s quieter devotion as well as the importance of family and community. Mayu comes from a large, loving family and often invites Aoi and her friends to family gatherings, providing warmth and depth to the story. She also assists Aoi in navigating the difficulties of her relationship with Kaoru, demonstrating a strong bond of friendship despite their romantic rivalry.
Mayu undergoes modest development. She tries hard to do things that would make Kaoru happy, such as learning to cook from Aoi so she can prepare lunch for him. This effort reflects her willingness to grow beyond her privileged background and connect with others in more personal ways. She remains the last among the core group to accept Kaoru and Aoi’s engagement, but her loyalty and kindness endure.
Notable abilities include her academic prowess, being a college student at age sixteen, and her skill as a pianist, which is described as prodigious. She also speaks English with a Japanese-inflected received pronunciation, a result of her schooling in England. Her collection of stuffed animals is a recurring symbol of her emotional need to fill the absence left by her perpetually busy parents. Overall, Mayu Miyuki is a vibrant character whose mix of bold flirtatiousness, underlying loneliness, and genuine care for those around her adds complexity to the world of Ai Yori Aoshi.
