Description
Hakurei is the Silver Saint of the Altar Cloth and a central figure in the story of Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. He is an elderly yet powerfully built man, recognizable by his long silver-white hair tied in a ponytail and the distinctive spiral eyebrows of his Lemurian heritage, which also grants him an extraordinarily long lifespan. Over two hundred and seventy years old, he serves as the wise and reclusive Elder of Jamir, a mountainous region in Tibet, where he dedicates himself to the sacred duty of repairing the Saints' Cloths.
As the elder twin brother of Sage, the Pope of the Sanctuary, Hakurei possesses a complex and often misunderstood personality. He is a deeply faithful servant of the goddess Athena, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to defeat evil. Yet, he is also a rebellious figure who does not always obey the Pope's orders, preferring to follow his own methods. This independent nature can make him appear proud or selfish, but it stems from centuries of experience and a clear vision of what is necessary for victory. Despite his occasional impatience, he has a dry sense of humor, often joking about his old age, and shows deep commitment and sorrow when his students stray from the path of a Saint.
Hakurei is a survivor of the previous Holy War against Hades, a brutal conflict in which he and his brother were the only Saints left alive after the Twin Gods Hypnos and Thanatos slaughtered their comrades. This trauma forged an unyielding ambition for revenge and a pragmatic, long-term strategic mindset. Following this war, he was originally entrusted with the position of Pope but relinquished it to his younger brother, choosing to live in seclusion in Jamir. This decision allowed him to focus on training future generations and maintaining the Saints' armors, working in the shadows to prepare for the next inevitable battle.
Throughout the story, Hakurei acts as a crucial mentor and strategist. He is the master of several key characters, including Shion, who would later become the Aries Saint; the female Grou Saint Yuzuriha; Tokusa; and the young prodigy Atla. He also trained an ambitious disciple named Avido, who later became the leader of the Black Saints, a failure that caused Hakurei great personal pain. His role expands dramatically following his brother's death. To prevent the Sanctuary from falling into despair, he secretly assumes the position of Pope, disguising himself as Sage to maintain morale. Driven by the need to break Hades' destructive barrier, he launches a desperate solo mission into the enemy's cathedral.
In terms of development, Hakurei transitions from a reclusive repairman to a decisive, active leader on the front lines. His character arc culminates in a confrontation with the god Hypnos. In this final battle, Hakurei demonstrates his immense power, considered to rival that of a Gold Saint. He single-handedly destroys a meteor summoned by the god and unleashes his ultimate technique, the Praesepe Returning Spirits Wave. This powerful attack summons the souls of all the Saints who fell in the previous Holy War, including his brother Sage, channeling their collective cosmos into a massive energy sphere to seal Hypnos away. Despite this incredible feat and his sacrifice, he is ultimately struck down by the god Hades himself, meeting his end just as victory seemed within reach.
His notable abilities are exceptional for a Silver Saint. As a Lemurian, he possesses natural psychic powers such as teleportation and telekinesis. His signature technique, the Sekishiki Tenryōha, allows him to manipulate souls, which he uses to send living beings to the Underworld or, in its ultimate form, as a devastating offensive wave. His Cosmos is extraordinarily powerful, refined over centuries of training and combat, allowing him to face divine beings without the protection of a Gold Cloth. His primary role as a repairer is also a unique ability, as he can restore even the most damaged Cloths using his own blood and immense life force.
