Description
Capricorni El Cid, also known as El Cid of Capricorn, is the Gold Saint who guards the tenth house of the Sanctuary during the 18th century, serving as the predecessor of Capricorn Shura from the original series. He is a man of Spanish origin, aged twenty-six, with a physical appearance that strongly resembles Shura, distinguished primarily by the length and darker, blue-tinged tone of his hair. As a Gold Saint, his training took place in the Pyrenees Mountains of Spain and at the Sanctuary in Greece.
El Cid initially presents an extremely cold and severe demeanor, appearing as a quiet and introspective silent assassin capable of executing even allies without hesitation if they betray their duty. This seemingly hostile and apathetic exterior, as described by Libra Dohko, reflects a soul that is as cold and sharp as a blade. Despite this frightening impression, he is deeply respected by his peers and is fundamentally a gentleman of strong character who is always willing to help when called upon. His stoic nature is legendary; even while suffering the pain of a severed limb and extreme blood loss during battle, he refuses to utter a single sound of agony, which serves to unnerve his divine opponents.
The core of his personality and the engine of his existence is his absolute devotion to his fighting style. El Cid harbors no personal dreams, fantasies, or ambitions beyond the perfection of his right arm. His sole goal is to forge his limb into the ultimate weapon, one worthy of being called the sacred sword Excalibur. This singular obsession is so potent that it becomes a weapon in itself; when the Dream God Phantasos attempts to capture his soul and view his dreams, the god finds nothing but the image of a spiritual sword, which promptly cuts through the divine disguise.
Within the narrative of the Holy War against Hades, El Cid is initially dispatched to aid his comrade, Cancer Manigoldo. His role becomes critical when he confronts the four Dream Gods, the sons of Hypnos who guard the realm of dreams. In his first encounter with Icelus, the god of illusions warps space to turn El Cid's own Excalibur against him, severing his right arm and casting him into an abyss. Unbroken, El Cid uses the connection between his severed arm and his armor to tear a rift through dimensions, invading the Dream World. There, he immediately kills Phantasos and later decapitates Icelus by using his own flowing blood to mark the fabric of warped space, allowing him to predict where the god would reappear.
His most significant relationship is with Sagittarius Sisyphos, whom he considers a brother and his best friend. He also commands a group of loyal servants and disciples, including Pyxis Lusk, Vela Tsubaki, Puppis Lacaille, and a young man named Pakia. Although he was prepared to execute Pakia for fleeing his duties, the intervention of Sisyphos helped El Cid learn a measure of mercy, allowing Pakia to serve the Sanctuary in other ways. In the final battle against the fused Dream God Oneiros, these three disciples sacrifice themselves to aid their master, though they are easily killed by the divine creature.
El Cid undergoes notable development through his ordeal. While he begins as a figure of absolute, unfeeling law, his bonds with Sisyphos and his servants reveal a hidden capacity for trust and camaraderie. His pragmatic ruthlessness is tempered by a strategic mind, demonstrated when he collaborates with Pegasus Tenma to use the Jumping Stone technique, a powerful kick that utilizes the opponent's momentum, to send Oneiros back to the real world.
In terms of abilities, El Cid possesses the standard powers of a Gold Saint, including control over the Seventh Sense and attacks performed at the speed of light. His signature technique is the Sacred Sword Excalibur, a divine blade granted to the most loyal saint of Athena, which manifests as a cutting edge from his limbs. He demonstrates extraordinary mastery over this power, evolving it into a Soul Blade capable of harming gods and a Dimension Slash that can cut through space to travel between worlds. His other techniques include Jumping Stone and Sharpening, which involves using the Excalibur with his own blood. His ultimate feat is cutting the golden arrow of Sagittarius Sisyphus, imbued with Athena's cosmos, into four pieces to simultaneously strike the four souls of the merged Dream God Oneiros, securing the gods' final defeat.
El Cid meets his end immediately following this victory. In the manga, he collapses and dies from massive blood loss after the battle concludes. In the anime adaptation, he perishes by shielding Pegasus Tenma from Oneiros' final attack, disappearing in a massive explosion alongside the Dream Gods. Even after death, his spirit returns alongside the other fallen Gold Saints to participate in a final, unified assault against the god Hades, cementing his legacy as one of the most powerful and devoted warriors in the service of Athena.
