Description
Zen Toono is a college student serving as a substitute teacher at Miko Yotsuya's high school. He possesses an average build, short tousled hair with bangs hanging on the left side, and tired orange eyes, typically maintaining an impassive expression. His attire consists of a button-up shirt, navy blue slacks, and brown dress shoes, attracting admiration from female students.
His childhood was marked by trauma under the control of his abusive mother, Mrs. Toono. After scoring two points below perfect on a test, she subjected him to relentless berating, rejecting his apologies. She emotionally manipulated him into missing a friend's birthday party, accusing him of betrayal and comparing him to his absent father. During this time, he secretly cared for a stray cat found in a park, but his mother discovered and killed it, labeling him an ungrateful burden. He silently accepted this abuse without resistance.
Following his mother's death, he dedicated himself to caring for neighborhood strays as atonement for the cat he failed to protect. Many of these cats died prematurely, implied to result from his mother's lingering spirit draining their life force. He views this duty as necessary penance for his unresolved guilt.
His initial stoic demeanor and the presence of distorted cat spirits around him led Miko to suspect him of animal abuse and killing, compounded by a colossal spirit accompanying him. This was a misunderstanding. Despite his detached exterior, he demonstrates deep compassion for animals, exemplified when he risked his life leaping in front of a car to protect a kitten. He later tracked down the actual cat killer, attacking him with a taser and impliedly killing him while concealing the body.
He shares a unique connection with the supernatural world, unable to see spirits clearly but sensing their presence and interacting with them in ways others cannot. This ability positions him to support Miko as she navigates her supernatural experiences, helping her manage encounters while maintaining secrecy.
Personality assessments describe him as pragmatic, detail-oriented, and reserved, with a strong sense of duty and preference for routine. He exhibits traits associated with the ISTJ personality type and Enneagram Type 5w4 ("The Investigator"), characterized by a thirst for knowledge, introversion, and emotional detachment. His actions are driven by logic and responsibility, though he struggles with interpersonal connections.
His name reflects key aspects of his character: "Zen" (善) means "goodness, virtue, or right," while "Toono" combines "distant, far" (遠) and "field, wilderness" (野), symbolizing his complex journey toward redemption and the lingering impact of his past.
