Description
Morpheus, also known as the Modeler Morpheus, is a divine being in Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. He is one of the four Dream Gods, the Oneiroi, who serve under Hypnos, the God of Sleep, and ultimately the god Hades. Morpheus is the eldest of the triplets among the Dream Gods, with Icelus and Phantasos as his brothers. His domain is Morphia, a region within the dream world where he holds the souls of heroes and monarchs captive in eternal slumber.

In terms of personality, Morpheus is notably reserved and quiet compared to his siblings, yet he carries an arrogant and condescending attitude toward mortals. He underestimates the willpower of his victims, believing his dream traps to be inescapable. His primary motivation is to carry out the orders of Hypnos by ensnaring Athena's Saints in endless dreams, thereby preventing them from interfering in Hades' Holy War.

Morpheus plays a significant role in the Dream World arc of the story. He captures the Pegasus Saint Tenma and traps him in an idealized dream where the Holy War never occurred and Tenma lives peacefully with his childhood friends Alone and Sasha. Morpheus also held the Sagittarius Saint Sisyphus in the same dream realm. To maintain his control, Morpheus uses the Poppies of the Dream World, flowers that burrow into a victim's conscience and drain their emotions, memories, and will to fight. As the poppies turn colorless, the victim gradually forgets reality. In the anime adaptation, this technique is called Morphium Coma.

Morpheus' key relationships are primarily with his fellow Dream Gods and his master Hypnos. He works alongside Oneiros, Icelos, and Phantasos, and later unites with them in a combined form for a final confrontation against the Saints El Cid of Capricorn and Tenma. His attitude toward his victims is dismissive; he creates a doppelganger of Tenma that reflects the Saint's hidden wish to stay in the dream, but Tenma rejects this illusion.

Development for Morpheus is limited but notable. He initially succeeds in capturing Tenma, but the intervention of Athena allows Tenma to break free. When Morpheus attempts to reassert control, Tenma temporarily awakens the Pegasus God Cloth and defeats Morpheus in a single blow. Morpheus dies surprised and bitter, realizing that Alone's connection to Tenma was the catalyst for the Saint's transformation. He later reappears merged with the other Dream Gods for a final battle, but this combined entity is also ultimately destroyed.

Among his notable abilities, Morpheus possesses absolute control over Morphia, crafting elaborate dreamscapes that even Athena cannot easily penetrate. He can create illusions that mimic a victim's deepest desires and can drain a person's emotions through his poppies, leaving them a hollow shell. However, despite his power over dreams, he is vulnerable to the overwhelming will of a Saint who has awakened a higher level of cosmos, as demonstrated by Tenma's brief God Cloth manifestation.
