Description
El Cid de Capricorn is the Gold Saint of the Capricorn Temple during the 18th century Holy War against Hades, serving as the predecessor to Shura. Born on December 27th, he stands 1.87 meters tall with black hair, ice-blue eyes, and a physical resemblance to his future successor. His name and Spanish nationality are a tribute to the legendary Castilian knight Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known as El Cid.

El Cid possesses an introspective, calm, and remarkably stoic personality. He often carries a mysterious air and appears as a silent, focused warrior, sometimes giving the cold impression of a silent assassin. According to the Libra Saint Dohko, his soul is as cold and sharp as a blade. Beneath this seemingly apathetic exterior, however, he is a gentleman of strong character who esteems his comrades, is always willing to help, and maintains an unwavering determination. This iron will is so profound that it can overcome illusions, as seen when his obsession with perfecting his sword allowed him to break free from a dream god's spell. He is also a strict master, enforcing Sanctuary laws without mercy, such as when he nearly executed his own apprentice for desertion. Despite this harshness, he demonstrates deep care for his subordinates by forbidding them from joining him on lethal missions to spare them from harm, a sentiment his followers ultimately understand and honor.

Driven by a lifelong promise made during his youth, El Cid is obsessed with forging the perfect blade, the sacred sword Excalibur. He once trained alongside a girl named Mine who shared this dream. After Mine died from illness, he dedicated himself entirely to fulfilling their shared ambition, swearing to become the ultimate sword himself. This personal mission aligns perfectly with his duty as a Gold Saint, as he seeks to hone his cosmos to its sharpest edge to protect Athena. His primary motivation in the Holy War is a practical and loyal one: to rescue his close friend, the Sagittarius Saint Sisyphus, whose soul had been trapped and imprisoned in the Dream World by the gods of Olympus.

El Cid serves as the guardian of the Capricorn House, a position he holds with absolute seriousness. His most significant contribution to the war effort is his solo infiltration of the Dream World (Mukai), the domain of the god Hypnos. While initially sent to assist the Cancer Saint Manigoldo against Thanatos, he arrives too late but quickly pivots to recover the soul of Sisyphus, whom he believes to be a crucial asset for Athena. Upon confronting the four Dream Gods—Icelus, Phantasos, Morpheus, and Oneiros—he suffers a grievous injury, losing his right arm to Icelus’s spatial manipulation. Unfazed, he uses the severed limb’s resonance as a guide to tear through dimensions and enter the Dream World, immediately killing Phantasos. He then kills Icelus by covering the area with his own blood to detect distortions in space, revealing the god’s position. When the final god Oneiros merges with his brothers’ souls into a powerful creature, El Cid executes a coordinated strategy with Sisyphus and Athena. He uses his Excalibur to cut the Golden Arrow into four precise fragments, simultaneously destroying the four souls sustaining Oneiros. In the final moment, he sacrifices himself by intercepting the dying god’s last attack to protect the Pegasus Saint Tenma, dying in the resulting explosion.

The central relationship in El Cid’s life is his friendship with Sagittarius Sisyphus. The two traveled together to investigate the twin gods Thanatos and Hypnos, building a deep mutual trust that allows them to execute flawless team strategies without communication. He is the master of several subordinates, including Lacaille of Puppis, Rusk of Pyxis, and Tsubaki of Vela, whom he keeps at a distance to protect. He also shares a bond with the young Pegasus Saint Tenma, whom he ultimately shields from harm. In his youth, his connection to Mine defined his path, while the warrior Felser served as a rival and cautionary tale about dreams twisted by divine power.

Throughout the story, El Cid undergoes a subtle but powerful development. Initially presented as an unreadable and almost ruthless warrior, his actions reveal a profound sense of duty and care. The loss of his arm becomes a catalyst rather than a hindrance; he adapts immediately, creating a sword of pure cosmos and using his own flowing blood as a weapon. His arc culminates in a transition from a solitary fighter focused on a personal promise into a strategic savior who willingly destroys himself to ensure the survival of his comrades and victory for Athena.

As a Gold Saint, El Cid commands the Seventh Sense, allowing him to fight at the speed of light. His primary technique is Excalibur, the legendary sword granted to the Capricorn Saint by Athena in myth. By channeling his cosmos into his limbs, particularly his right arm, he transforms them into blades capable of cutting through virtually any substance, including the Surplices of Specters and divine flesh. Even when his physical arm is severed, he can still project Caliburn, a blade made of concentrated cosmos. He also utilizes Jumping Stone, a counterattack technique where he hooks his legs under an opponent to redirect their momentum and hurl them away with their own force. He also demonstrated the ability to cut through the very fabric of space and dimensions to enter the Dream World. Despite his mastery, El Cid constantly trains to sharpen his blade, believing that even his peerless Excalibur is still incomplete compared to its true potential.
