Description
Chesa de Cat Sith, also known as Cait Sith Cheshire, is a Terrestrial Specter serving Hades in the Holy War of the 18th century as depicted in Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. He is a young man of short stature, standing 157 centimeters tall, with a slim build weighing 52 kilograms. His appearance is distinctive: he has dark or tanned skin, short silver-gray hair cut to ear length, and sharp yellow eyes with pupils resembling those of a cat. His Surplice, the battle armor of a Specter, is based on the Cait Sith, a fairy creature from Scottish and Irish mythology that takes the form of a giant black cat. His name itself is a direct reference to the Cheshire Cat from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, known for its mischievous grin and ability to vanish.
In terms of personality, Cheshire embodies many stereotypical feline traits. He is often relaxed, teasing, and somewhat mocking toward both enemies and allies, acting as a source of comic relief rather than a frontline combatant. He frequently displays a lazy and almost carefree attitude when a situation seems advantageous. Despite this laid-back exterior, he is attentive and focused on his duties, becoming serious when he realizes he has been outmaneuvered, such as during the battle in Jamir where he understands that the young Saints were merely a diversion. He can be childlike, prone to complaining, and is shown to be sensitive, even fearful, such as when he is startled by the sudden appearance of the twin gods Thanatos and Hypnos. He also has a strong sense of self-preservation, which contributes to his ability to survive the war.
Cheshire's primary role in the story is not as a warrior but as a loyal servant and charioteer to Pandora, the commander of Hades's army. He is first seen guiding a group of Specters during the invasion of Jamir, where he oversees the assault on the sanctuary where Virgo Asmita is creating a rosary to seal Specter souls. Throughout the Holy War, he is frequently seen at Pandora's side, driving her headless horse-drawn carriage. He escorts her on missions to punish the host of Hades, Alone, and later to the Lost Canvas, the immense painting intended to end humanity. Despite the many opportunities for battle, he never actively engages in a significant fight or demonstrates a powerful combat technique, preferring to observe and comment on events. He is noted to have a strange or highly refined intuitive ability, allowing him to sense danger and powerful Cosmos around him, which may explain his survival.
Regarding key relationships, Cheshire is most closely associated with Pandora, serving as her faithful attendant. His loyalty to her endures even after the defeat of Hades, as he remains by her side. He shares a friendly rapport with Sylph Edward, another Specter, and is often seen interacting with him. He also has a brief but notable interaction with the Bronze Saints, particularly Tenma of Pegasus, whom he taunts but never actually fights.
Cheshire undergoes a unique form of development in that he is one of the very few Specters to survive the entire Holy War. He demonstrates a remarkable knack for being present at pivotal moments without suffering fatal consequences. He is present for the death of the Judge of Hell, Rhadamanthys, and is later taken by Athena's forces, where he witnesses the goddess resurrect the petrified Saints. By the end of the story, he is freed from his status as a Specter, no longer bearing the mark or allegiance of Hades. His final appearance shows him in Germany, continuing to drive Pandora's carriage with normal horses as she seals the imprisoned gods Thanatos and Hypnos in the Heinstein Castle estate. His journey is from a servant of the underworld to a simple, loyal attendant, having outlasted nearly all of his comrades.
While Cheshire does not possess overwhelming offensive power, he has notable abilities related to his feline nature. He is incredibly agile, capable of long-distance jumps and always landing on his feet, and he possesses the heightened senses and excellent balance of a cat. He also has a refined sixth sense that grants him a unique ability to sense danger. He is credited with two named techniques: Hide and Seek and Perky Party, though these are never demonstrated in a combat scenario. His primary skills are intuition, agility, and an uncanny talent for survival.
