Description
Nasu Veronica is a Specter of Hades who appears exclusively in Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. He serves as the celestial Specter of the Heavenly Study Star, and his name references Zoroastrian concepts of impurity and the corpse demon Druj Nasu. He was granted a fraction of Thanatos’s power, rendering him physically immortal and making him the sole guardian of the Forest of Death that Thanatos created to protect Hades’s territory.

Little is known of Veronica’s origins before his service to Hades. His personality is marked by theatricality, arrogance, and a profound disdain for living beings. He presents himself in an androgynous manner, often wearing a nun’s habit and playing an organ, and he takes pleasure in manipulating the dead to torment the living. He views the warmth and vitality of the living as repulsive and prefers the cold stillness of the dead. His motivations align with the goals of Hades and Thanatos: he seeks to spread death and decay, seeing it as a form of cleansing or ultimate salvation.

In the story, Veronica appears during the journey of Pegasus Tenma and his allies through the Forest of Death. He creates illusions that force Tenma, Yato, and Yuzuriha to fight grotesque versions of their loved ones and former friends. He later reveals himself inside a ruined church, where he uses an organ to control reanimated corpses. When confronted, he summons swarms of flies for both offense and defense, and he can spew these insects from his mouth. His primary technique, Burial Fort, generates a corrosive sludge that disintegrates everything it touches, including the Saints’ cloths. He also has the ability to raise the dead and command them as puppets, and he can generate illusions that interact with his victims across long distances.

Veronica’s key relationship is with Thanatos, from whom he receives his immortality and authority over the forest. He has no known personal connections to other Specters or humans. His conflict with the Saints, particularly Tenma, Yato, and Yuzuriha, is driven by his duty to guard the forest and his inherent hostility toward the living. His most direct adversary is Cancer Manigoldo, who ultimately defeats him. Despite being cut in half by Manigoldo’s Acubens technique, Veronica regenerates thanks to his immortality. However, Manigoldo then uses the Sekishiki Meikai Ha to tear out Veronica’s soul and destroy it with demonic flames, permanently killing him.

Veronica shows little development over the course of his brief appearance; he remains steadfast in his allegiance to Hades and his enjoyment of cruelty. His role is that of a formidable obstacle for the protagonists, showcasing the eerie and macabre powers granted by Thanatos. Notable abilities include physical immortality, control over flies and corpses, illusion creation, the corrosive Burial Fort technique, and the capacity to manifest a five-pointed black star on his forehead when drawing on Thanatos’s power.
