Description
Degel di Aquarius is the Gold Saint of the eleventh house, the Aquarius Temple, in the 18th-century Holy War depicted in Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas. He is a young man of 22 years with green hair and violet eyes, standing 184 centimeters tall. A distinctive feature is his glasses, which are a gift from a young girl named Fluorite after his eyesight was damaged in a previous conflict, making him the only known Saint to wear such an accessory. He is renowned throughout the Sanctuary as the wisest among Athena's Saints, being the only person besides the Pope capable of reading and interpreting the stars. True to this reputation, his personal quarters within the Aquarius Temple are filled with extensive libraries, reflecting his deep commitment to knowledge and study.
Degel's outward demeanor is typically calm, polite, and highly analytical. His fighting style is defensive and controlled, relying on precise strikes aimed at stopping the movement of atoms rather than destroying them with brute force. This requires intense concentration, and he performs best when his mind is clear and focused. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a person of profound emotion, which stands as the antithesis of his freezing abilities. When faced with situations involving cherished friends, his reasoning can become clouded by feelings of worry, anguish, and nostalgia, causing him to act impulsively and ignore tactical advice. This internal conflict between his logical mind and his passionate heart is a central aspect of his character.
His motivations are deeply rooted in personal bonds and a sense of duty. He trained in the frozen lands of Bluegrad, a region plagued by eternal cold, where he formed an unbreakable childhood friendship with Unity and his sister, Seraphina. Degel became a Saint partly to fulfill a promise made to Unity under the constellation of Cygnus: to protect the world and build a bridge between Bluegrad and the outside. He is also the disciple of Krest, the former Aquarius Gold Saint who participated in the previous Holy War, and from him, he inherited the techniques of absolute zero. Within the Sanctuary, Degel acts as a key strategist and advisor to Pope Sage, assisting in astronomical observations. He shares a particularly close bond with Kardia of Scorpio, whose burning heart requires constant cooling; Degel's ice is uniquely suited to alleviate his friend's suffering, forging a strong alliance and friendship between them.
In the narrative, Degel is entrusted by Athena with a critical mission to secure the Orichalcum, a divine crystal holding the power of Poseidon, which is needed to construct a ship to infiltrate the Lost Canvas of Hades. He travels to Bluegrad with Kardia, where he is forced to confront his past. Upon reaching the sunken temple of Atlantis, he witnesses what appears to be the murder of his friend Unity by the Specter Rhadamanthys. Overcome with rage, Degel attacks recklessly, abandoning his tactical precision and proving ineffective. He soon discovers that Unity has survived and become a Marina General of Poseidon, having been driven to desperate measures to save Bluegrad from its icy end. Degel is then forced into a heartbreaking battle against his childhood friend. Ultimately, he overcomes Unity with his powerful Aurora Execution, freeing him from the Sea God's influence and retrieving the Orichalcum.
The climax of his journey occurs when Pandora shatters part of the Orichalcum, causing Poseidon's immense power to pour into the body of Seraphina, the woman Degel loved. To prevent this catastrophic energy from destroying the world, Degel makes the ultimate sacrifice. Reaching the absolute zero temperature of minus 273.15 degrees Celsius for the first time, he executes the Freezing Coffin, an indestructible tomb of ice that seals not only Seraphina and the god Poseidon but also himself and the entire submerged continent of Atlantis. In his final moments, he entrusts the remaining Orichalcum to a redeemed Unity, asking him to deliver it to Athena, and declares that he and Seraphina will watch over them from the ice. Even after death, Degel's spirit returns alongside the other fallen Gold Saints in a collective effort to destroy the Wailing Wall and help Athena reach the realm of Hades.
As a warrior who commands the power of absolute zero, Degel's abilities are among the most formidable among the Gold Saints. His basic technique is Diamond Dust, a concentrated blast of freezing air and ice crystals that is as beautiful as it is deadly. He uses Ice Ring, or Kolitso, to create restrictive rings of icy wind that immobilize an opponent, preventing any movement. His ultimate offensive technique is Aurora Execution, where he forms the shape of the Aquarius vase with his arms and releases a devastating beam of energy that simulates the aurora, capable of reaching the temperature of absolute zero. His final defensive technique is the Freezing Coffin, which he can erect as a near-impenetrable shield or, at its maximum power, as a massive prison of ice so strong that it can contain even the unleashed power of a god.
