Description
Kagaho de Benu, known as the Heavenly Savage Star, Bennu Kagaho, is a powerful specter introduced in the Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas manga. He is an eighteen-year-old warrior whose surplice, or armor, is modeled after the Bennu, a bird from ancient Egyptian mythology that is associated with the sun god Ra and often considered a precursor to the legend of the phoenix. Kagaho is recognized as one of the most formidable members of Hades's army, possessing strength comparable to the three judges of the underworld and a reputation as the fastest among all specters.
The driving force behind Kagaho’s fierce and violent personality is a deep, unhealed wound from his past. He once lived only for his younger brother, Sui, whom he supported through street fights, frequently returning home injured. Consumed by guilt and the belief that he was a burden causing his brother's suffering, Sui ultimately took his own life. This tragic event plunged Kagaho into a state of intense rage and loneliness, leaving him a solitary and impulsive individual who channels his pain into combat. Despite his outwardly cruel and sadistic demeanor, several of his adversaries sense a fundamental goodness within him, a spark of humanity that is not entirely extinguished.
Kagaho's motivations are rooted in a profound need for loyalty and protection. He transfers his unresolved feelings for his deceased brother onto the young man who becomes the vessel for Hades, Alone. He serves the dark god not out of blind obedience but out of a genuine, if misplaced, devotion to Alone himself, whose gentle nature reminds him of Sui. This loyalty places him in a unique and treacherous position. While he is a specter of Hades, his ultimate allegiance is to the host, Alone, leading him to clash even with the god's commanding officer, Pandora, whose authority he openly disregards.
Throughout the holy war, Kagaho’s role is defined by a series of pivotal confrontations that slowly erode his violent resolve. His path crosses significantly with two golden saints. In an early battle, the Virgo saint Asmita sees through Kagaho’s rage to the sorrow beneath, defeating him and advising him to one day find his own true path. Later, seeking revenge against the Libra saint Dohko for a scratch inflicted on Alone, Kagaho instead encounters the Taurus saint, Hasgard. In a brutal fight, Hasgard spares his life, declaring that Kagaho is not truly evil. This act of mercy leaves a profound mark. In a surprising turn, after Hasgard is killed in battle, Kagaho returns to the site to protect the Taurus saint's corpse from being desecrated by a lowly specter, an act that shows the beginning of his change of heart.
His relationship with Dohko becomes the central axis of his development. What begins as a rivalry deepens when Kagaho secretly rescues the wounded Dohko, delivering him to safety so that he might one day face him again in combat. This tangled bond finally culminates in their last battle within the Demon Palace of Earth. As they fight, Dohko comes to understand the source of Kagaho’s pain, seeing the memory of his brother Sui. When Dohko unleashes the suicidal Libra technique, the Rozan Koryuha, which launches both combatants towards the sun, Kagaho experiences a final epiphany. His flames shift in color, and in a moment of ultimate selflessness, he pushes Dohko back to Earth. He then embraces his own death, flying into the sun on his own accord, finally free from his anger. In his final moments, he asks Athena and her saints to save Alone, entrusting his last wish to his former enemy.
Kagaho’s combat abilities are as notable as his character arc. He fights with unique black flames that are distinct from ordinary fire. Among his techniques is the Corona Blast, where he creates and hurls an enormous sphere of stellar fire at his opponent. His signature move is the Crucify Ankh, a cruel technique that impales an enemy with stakes of dark fire, burning them from the inside out before forming a fiery cross that completely destroys them. In his most powerful state, Kagaho can enter a form known as the Flame Demon Man, a transformation that fuses his power with infernal energy. In this state, he can unleash his ultimate technique, the Rising Darkness, which creates a small, black sun that generates devastating, dehydration-inducing heat capable of melting even gold cloths.
