Description
Fermi Amati, whose name is also spelled Amarty, is a young traveling merchant who appears in the first story arc of Spice and Wolf II. He is a blonde-haired, blue-eyed young man, still in his teens, and works as a broker, being a member of the Rowen Merchant Association. Despite his youth, he is depicted as successful, ambitious, and confident in his mercantile abilities.
Personality-wise, Amati is initially presented as charming and earnest, but his most defining trait is his naive and headstrong romanticism. He becomes instantly and deeply smitten with Holo upon meeting her in the town of Kumersun, mistaking her for a kind, gentle, and refined young lady. This perception is largely due to Holo's own playful and misleading performance, where she acts as a pious, debt-ridden traveling nun, which only fuels Amati's chivalrous and protective instincts. He is driven by a genuine, if misguided, desire to rescue Holo from what he believes is a burdensome arrangement with the merchant Kraft Lawrence. His confidence borders on arrogance, as he believes in his ability to win Holo's heart through a grand, merchant-style gesture.
Amati's primary role in the narrative is to serve as a rival to Kraft Lawrence and a catalyst for a significant conflict in the latter's relationship with Holo. Misunderstanding the complex bond between Lawrence and Holo, and encouraged by Holo's own teasing behavior, Amati proposes a formal contract to Lawrence. He offers to pay off all of Holo's supposed debts in exchange for her freedom, intending to then marry her himself. This proposition forces Lawrence into a high-stakes market duel over pyrite, a type of iron ore, where Amati's mercantile skill and considerable savings are pitted against Lawrence's cunning and experience. This challenge is the central engine of the Kumersun arc, pushing Lawrence to confront the depth of his own feelings for Holo.
His key relationship is naturally with Holo, whom he idealizes and seeks to possess, unaware of her true nature as the Wise Wolf of Yoitsu. He also becomes a direct rival and antagonist to Kraft Lawrence, challenging him not just in business but for the companionship of his partner. While Amati interacts with other merchants like Lawrence's friend Mark, his role as a loner is emphasized, which ultimately becomes a tactical disadvantage in his market duel with the better-connected Lawrence.
Amati himself undergoes little internal development, serving more as a mirror to reflect the growth of Lawrence and Holo's relationship. His challenge and subsequent failure force Lawrence to fight for Holo, revealing the merchant's commitment beyond profit, and prompts Holo to confront her own fears and take an active role in preserving their partnership. In terms of abilities, Amati is a capable and shrewd merchant with significant financial resources for his age. He understands complex market mechanics and is confident in his ability to profit from a volatile market, showcasing his technical skill in trade. However, his primary flaw is an emotional one: his infatuation blinds him to the true nature of his situation and the people he is dealing with, making him vulnerable to more subtle psychological and strategic maneuvering.
