Description
Abe is a merchant who appears in the second season of the anime, playing a significant role as both an ally and an antagonist. She is a shrewd businesswoman who becomes acquainted with the traveling merchant Kraft Lawrence during his journey. Her background is marked by hardship and isolation, having been abandoned since the beginning of her life and eventually bought by an aristocrat. She witnessed firsthand how the endless desire for ever-increasing profit destroyed that person, yet she has chosen to walk the same dangerous path. She keeps her true identity concealed at all times, and as a result, her drive for profit is what primarily defines her to the outside world.

In terms of personality, Abe is intelligent, calculating, and deeply lonely. Her morals have eroded due to her circumstances, making her capable of actions that others might find ruthless, including physically threatening Lawrence on three separate occasions. Despite this hardness, she is not without a trace of longing for something more. She retains a small part of herself that wishes to break the chain of self-destruction brought on by greed and to become something greater. This internal conflict is visible in her interactions, where she seems to almost want others to see through her schemes. When her cover is blown, she does not react with shock but with a smile, suggesting that her actions are partly an act of loneliness and a desire for someone to truly understand her.

Abe’s primary motivation is the acquisition of profit, which she sees as the only companion she has left. However, her motivations run deeper than simple avarice. Her grand, almost suicidal plan is not just about money but about achieving a level of success that might free her from the chain of greed that consumed her former master, even as she follows the same self-destructive path. In the story, she first appears as a fellow merchant with whom Lawrence has a late-night conversation, an encounter that inadvertently sparks a moment of jealousy in his companion, Horo. Abe’s role escalates drastically when she makes a shocking and absurd proposition to Lawrence: to sell Horo. This deal forms the central conflict of the final arc, forcing Lawrence to confront the true cost of his merchant ambitions.

The key relationship in Abe’s story is with Lawrence, as she serves as a dark foil to him. She represents the path Lawrence might have ended up on had he never met Horo, a lonely man with only money on his mind. Her relationship with Horo is largely indirect, defined by her plan to acquire the wolf deity. Beyond Lawrence, her connections are sparse and cold; her only sort of friend is an innkeeper, but they are not particularly close and mostly sit in silence. All her other acquaintances are merely business associates or sources of information.

Abe does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation but rather reveals her true nature as the plot progresses. Initially appearing as a potential ally, she is gradually shown to be a deeply flawed and tragic character. Her development is less about change and more about the unveiling of her desperation and loneliness, culminating in her final confrontation with Lawrence where her entire scheme is laid bare. As a merchant, her notable abilities lie in her sharp business acumen, her ability to create complex and risky financial plots, and her skill in negotiation and information brokering. She is specifically involved in the trade of stone statues, a business she was looking to exit to cut her losses before engaging Lawrence in her larger scheme.
