TV-Series
Description
Abe no Masahiro is the protagonist of the story, a thirteen-year-old onmyouji in training who serves as the grandson of the legendary Abe no Seimei. He is the youngest of three brothers and, among all of Seimei's descendants, is said to have inherited the strongest concentration of his grandfather's spiritual power and the blood of the celestial fox. However, when he was very young, his exceptionally strong spiritual sight was temporarily sealed by Seimei to protect him until he was old enough to handle it properly. As a result, he grows up appearing to be a mediocre and untalented apprentice, which leads him to consider abandoning the path of an onmyouji altogether.
In terms of personality, Masahiro is generally friendly and kind, treating both humans and yokai with the same level of compassion. He is determined to protect those close to him from the evil demons that threaten the imperial capital. He can often be cocky and clumsy, but these traits are balanced by a strong sense of justice and a hardworking nature that sometimes leads him to overexert himself. He hates losing and can be quite stubborn when he sets his mind to a task. His most defining personal struggle is his deep resentment of being known merely as Seimei no Mago, or "Seimei's grandson". He trains relentlessly to surpass his grandfather and earn recognition for his own merits, frequently becoming irritated when others hold him to the high expectations set by Seimei's legacy.
Masahiro's primary motivation throughout the series is to prove himself as a great onmyouji in his own right, without relying on his grandfather's reputation. He is driven by a need to protect those he cares about, particularly Fujiwara no Akiko, a princess he rescues and vows to safeguard no matter the cost. Despite his occasional immaturity, he is deeply committed to his duties and values the bonds he forms with his spiritual companions.
Regarding his role in the story, Masahiro is an onmyouji serving the emperor. He is initially aided by a creature he names Mokkun, who appears as a small, dog-like monster. Throughout their adventures, Mokkun reveals himself to be Guren, also known as Touda, one of the powerful twelve shinshou (divine generals) who usually serve Seimei. Guren is a fiery spirit who was once an outcast among his kind due to a past incident where he was controlled by a curse and wounded Seimei. Despite this, Guren becomes Masahiro's most loyal partner and protector, having watched over him since he was an infant. Their relationship is central to the narrative; they bicker frequently, but share an unbreakable trust and are willing to lay down their lives for one another. Masahiro also shares a close, if exasperated, relationship with his grandfather, Seimei. Although Seimei claims Masahiro is the only one who can succeed him, he frequently teases and challenges his grandson to push him to grow stronger. Other key relationships include his growing romantic attachment to Fujiwara no Akiko, a noblewoman who also possesses spiritual sight, and his interactions with the other members of the twelve shinshou, many of whom initially doubt his abilities.
Masahiro undergoes significant development over the course of the series. Initially lacking confidence due to his sealed sight, he regains his abilities after meeting Mokkun and embraces his destiny. He evolves from a struggling apprentice into a capable onmyouji who faces increasingly dangerous threats. In one of the most dramatic arcs, Masahiro is forced to use the Kagutsuchi, divine flames capable of killing gods, to stop a corrupted Guren. Following this, he makes the ultimate sacrifice of his life to save Guren. Though he is resurrected through the intervention of his deceased grandmother, the return comes at the cost of his spiritual sight, which is lost again. This loss represents a major turning point, forcing him to adapt and grow even without the fundamental ability to see spirits, which is essential to his identity as an onmyouji.
Masahiro possesses several notable abilities as an onmyouji. His primary skills include traditional onmyoudou magic, which involves spells and astrological practices. He possesses immense latent potential that even he is often unaware of. His equipment includes the Goma no Tsurugi, a sword originally forged by Seimei that once belonged to the god Suzaku. He is also granted the Kagutsuchi, a powerful flame magic given to him by the god Takao no Kami, specifically intended to destroy divine or corrupted beings. While he is a trained onmyouji, he is also noted to possess physical skills comparable to a military officer, having received training in martial arts from the shinshou.
