Description
Placido, known as Primo in the English adaptation, is a character in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's and one of the main antagonists of its World Racing Grand Prix storyline. He belongs to a group called the Three Emperors of Yliaster, also known as the Three Pure Nobles, alongside his partners Luciano and Jose. The three are not truly separate individuals; each is an embodiment of a different stage of the life of Aporia, and each represents a specific form of despair. Placido corresponds to Aporia's young adulthood and embodies the despair that arose from the death of the person he loved, a loss that led to his revival as an android. His name, like those of his partners, is drawn from one of the Three Tenors, in his case Plácido Domingo.
In the devastated future from which Yliaster originates, the world was ruined by a conflict tied to Ener-D, the Meklord Emperors, and Synchro Summoning, and the group travels to the past in an attempt to alter that fate. Within the trio, Placido is the most aggressive and hands-on. Unlike Luciano and Jose, who prefer to wait for their grand plan to progress on its own, Placido is consumed by a determination to kill Yusei Fudo and force the completion of their circuit by direct action. He is cold, ruthless, and fixated on his mission, at times attacking Yusei physically rather than relying on dueling alone, and he treats Dark Glass in a similarly violent manner. His intensity sets him apart from the more patient members of his group.
His role in the story revolves around his repeated confrontations with Yusei and his participation in the World Racing Grand Prix. Placido rides a Duel Runner and commands the Meklord Emperor Wisel, a powerful Machine Emperor designed to counter Synchro Monsters by absorbing them and turning their strength against his opponents. In a notable turn, he merges with his D-Wheel to transform into Ultimate Placido, a fused form that heightens his threat during his duel with Yusei.
