Description
Dexter, known as Tenpei Hayano in the original Japanese version, is a minor but recurring character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime. He is a young duelist-in-training and a close friend of the twin siblings Leo and Luna, as well as another student named Bob. Dexter is a male teenager with brown hair, pink eyes, and is never seen without his signature pair of glasses. His typical outfit consists of the standard Duel Academy uniform, but when dressed casually, he wears a white collared shirt with a red bow tie, suspenders, navy blue shorts, white knee socks, and brown dress shoes.
Dexter has a generally sweet and kind personality. He is a loyal friend who often accompanies Leo and Luna on their various adventures. Initially, when he first meets the protagonist Yusei Fudo, Dexter is afraid of him because of Yusei's criminal mark, a stigma placed on former residents of the Satellite district. However, after Leo tells him that Yusei customized Duel Disks for him and his sister and that Yusei was strong enough to enter the Fortune Cup, Dexter’s fear turns into admiration. As a student, he is shown to be concerned about his grades and his standing at Duel Academy, once facing the threat of expulsion due to low academic performance.
Dexter's primary motivation is to improve as a duelist and support his friends. He enlists in the New Domino City Duel Academy alongside Leo, Luna, and Akiza Izinski to further his dueling education. As a supporting character, his role in the story is largely to follow the lead of Leo and Luna. He participates in key events alongside them, such as venturing into a supposedly haunted forest where Luna enters a trance, prompting Dexter to run and inform Yusei of the situation. He is also frequently seen in the audience during the World Racing Grand Prix, cheering for Team 5D's alongside his friends Patty and Bob. Even during the final arc involving the Ark Cradle, Dexter is present, cheering for Yusei in his climactic duel against the antagonist Z-one.
In terms of development, Dexter matures as a duelist and student throughout the series, though he remains a secondary figure whose arc is tied to the main cast's journeys. His most notable relationship is with Leo, as they are close friends and fellow duelists who share many scenes together. He is also a good friend of Bob, Luna, and Patty. Dexter is a member of the same Duel Academy class as Leo, Luna, and Akiza, and he looks up to Yusei Fudo after initially being intimidated by him.
Regarding dueling abilities, Dexter is shown to be a strategic thinker who prepares for specific opponents. He once claimed to have modified his Deck specifically to duel against Akiza Izinski, the Black Rose, indicating he built an anti-Plant Deck to counter her strategies. However, he never duels on-screen in the anime. The only card shown from his Deck is Batteryman AA. During a school lesson, he is also seen using a copy of Armed Samurai - Ben Kei. In the video game Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's World Championship 2010: Reverse of Arcadia, Dexter uses a Fairy Deck titled With Intelligence, and in the 2011 follow-up, he uses a similar Deck called Angel Inside.
