TV-Series
Description
Jakob, known as José in the original Japanese version, is a primary antagonist in the second season of the anime, serving as a key member of the Three Pure Nobles of Yliaster. He is one of three embodiments of despair created from the future survivor Aporia, specifically representing the despair Aporia suffered in his later years after having no one left to love. Alongside his counterparts Lester and Primo, Jakob was sent to the past to fulfill Yliaster's grand design.
In terms of appearance, Jakob is the largest of the three emperors, standing over seven feet tall with a towering and muscular frame. He has wrinkled skin, a long, father time style gray beard that extends to his waist, and a notably overgrown right eyebrow that covers his eye. His visible left eye is yellow, and aside from his facial hair, he is completely bald. Jakob wears the standard white cloak and hood of Yliaster, but with unique distinctions. His red gem is positioned above his right eye instead of between his eyes, and the grey infinity symbol patch on his face covers his nose and mouth like a gas mask, which has the effect of muffling his voice. His attire is accented with dark golden orange on his pants, chest, and shoulder pads. A notable feature is his built in Duel Disk, which unfolds from a hidden compartment in his abdomen directly beneath a sealed infinity symbol on his chest armor.
As the leader of the trio, Jakob acts as the superior figure, embodying wisdom, patience, and a methodical nature. He plans his moves carefully and demonstrates a great deal of patience in dealing with obstacles, particularly the impulsive actions of his younger counterpart, Primo. Despite his calm exterior, Jakob harbors a profound disdain for humanity. He views people as arrogant, shortsighted, and incapable of staying on the correct path without Yliaster's intervention. This cold attitude extends to his actions; he justifies the murder of Sherry LeBlanc's parents as a necessary correction of history and shows little remorse for those harmed by Yliaster. He is also quite ruthless, as shown during his Turbo Duel with Jack Atlas when he physically grabbed Jack and his Duel Runner to enforce a card effect. Jakob also possesses a degree of self reflection, acknowledging his own past immaturity when observing the actions of Lester and Primo.
Jakob's primary motivation is the completion of the Grand Design, which involves erasing what Yliaster believes is history's greatest mistake, the creation of Ener-D. Unlike Primo, who prefers direct and destructive action, Jakob believes in a more strategic approach. He insists on using the World Racing Grand Prix tournament to draw out and utilize the power of the Signers to complete their circuit, arguing that they lack the strength to complete their task alone. His role in the story is that of a master planner who works from the shadows. He manages the overall strategy of Yliaster, attempting to keep his team focused on the multigenerational plan and even orchestrating events, such as the creation of a Jack Atlas impostor, to test the power of the Crimson Dragon and further their goals when Primo goes rogue.
Jakob has distinct relationships with his fellow emperors, Lester and Primo. While they are all incarnations of the same person, Jakob treats them as subordinates. He often clashes with Primo, whose arrogance and impatience threaten to derail Jakob's long standing plan. Jakob sees Primo's attitude as something he himself outgrew long ago. Conversely, he watches Lester with a hint of nostalgia, remembering his own childhood years when he was similarly reckless. Together, they are known as Team New World in the WRGP, where they ultimately face Team 5D's in the finals. Throughout the WRGP arc, Jakob largely remains in the background, providing commentary and guidance until the final confrontation. His development is subtle, primarily revealed through his reflections on his younger selves and his unwavering commitment to his mission, leading to his final duel against Jack Atlas, where his true power as the keeper of the Meklord Emperor Granel is unleashed.
Jakob has several notable abilities beyond his dueling skills. As the leader of the Three Pure Nobles, he possesses immense psychokinetic power, demonstrated when he telekinetically moved Primo and stopped his stone tablet. He also exhibits superhuman strength, easily defeating Sherry LeBlanc in physical combat using only one arm and destroying a Duel Runner by throwing it into the ocean. He is capable of running at extreme speeds, with combustion visibly firing from his feet to propel him. Like Primo, Jakob can physically fuse with his specialized Duel Runner, a form resembling the Granel Carrier, to become a more complete version of his ace monster, Meklord Emperor Granel. In a duel, he is a formidable opponent known for using a Granel deck focused on summoning powerful Meklord monsters that can absorb an opponent's Synchro Monsters to increase their own attack power.
