Description
Blister, known as Saiga in the original Japanese version, is a character from the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's anime who describes himself as a jack of all trades. He is a resident of New Domino City and an acquaintance of the duelist Bolt Tanner.
Blister has a generally unkempt appearance, with short brown hair, brown eyes, and noticeable stubble. His typical attire consists of a sleeveless green jacket with a torn design around the shoulders, worn over a long-sleeved white shirt. He also wears brown pants secured with two belts, one of which holds a Deck box. In the past, he wore an orange neckerchief, and during a trip to the Satellite sector, he donned a brown fedora.
Several years before the main storyline, Blister was a successful tag-team duelist in the Exhibition League alongside his best friend, Aero. During a tag turbo duel, Blister lost control of his Duel Runner, leading to a crash. Although Blister managed to get out of the way, Aero was severely injured when he went back to retrieve their precious Machina Sniper card from the wreckage. The burned card was later sent to Blister, but he misinterpreted it as a spiteful message from his friend, which caused him to develop a grim and pessimistic outlook on friendship. He began to value technology and self-reliance over bonds with others.
Despite this cynical exterior, Blister proves to be a valuable ally. Following instructions from Bolt Tanner, the protagonist Yusei Fudo seeks out Blister to help recover his stolen Duel Runner and Deck from Sector Security. Initially ridiculing Yusei for his reckless plan to simply break into a secure facility, Blister nonetheless agrees to assist. He demonstrates his technical skills by creating a fake ID card and uniform for Yusei to use for infiltration and also uses a device to jam Yusei's criminal mark, preventing Security from tracking him. When Yusei is pursued by the officer Trudge, Blister intervenes, stalling the officer and later crashing his own Duel Runner into Trudge's to allow Yusei to escape.
Yusei helps Blister reinterpret the meaning behind the Machina Sniper card, convincing him that Aero did not send it as a grudge but as a final testament to their friendship. This realization causes Blister to begin trusting in personal bonds again, and he becomes a dedicated supporter of Yusei, even at great personal risk. He provides Yusei with a safe place to stay in New Domino City and later calls in a favor from an old contact to sneak into the Satellite sector to check on Yusei's captive friends when they are used as blackmail to force Yusei's participation in the Fortune Cup tournament.
Blister maintains a key relationship with Bolt Tanner, who was the one to direct Yusei to him for help. His primary role in the story is that of an ally and mentor figure to Yusei, using his unique skills to provide logistical and technical support rather than direct combat. He is resourceful, with notable abilities including hacking into databases, constructing useful items, and building jamming devices. Throughout the series, Blister remains a steadfast friend to Yusei and his group. He later travels with them to Satellite to confront the Dark Signers, poses as a Security officer to help recover Yusei's damaged Duel Runner, and ultimately helps evacuate Martha's orphanage during the final crisis involving the Ark Cradle. His known cards are from the Machina archetype, with Machina Sniper being the only card shown in the anime, holding significant emotional weight from his past.
