In the story, Divine plays a significant role as an antagonist, particularly in the arc involving the Dark Signers. He is first seen as a mentor figure to Akiza, having taken her in when her uncontrollable powers made her an outcast. He expertly isolates her from others, such as the protagonist Yusei Fudo, to maintain his influence over her, and sees her as the perfect symbol for the Arcadia Movement, whom he compares to a modern Joan of Arc. His role escalates when the Signers come to him for help against the Dark Signers. He refuses, revealing his true plan of world domination through his psychic army. He then proceeds to duel Leo, Luna's twin brother, in a brutal match designed to test for any latent psychic abilities and uses the opportunity to threaten the boy's life. Later, he murders the reporter Carly Carmine when she discovers his secrets, an act that directly leads to her reincarnation as a powerful Dark Signer who then seemingly destroys him.

Key relationships define Divine's character. His relationship with Akiza is the most central; he is a false savior who manipulates her loneliness and trauma to mold her into a weapon for his cause. He has a twisted view of her, calling her his "masterpiece" and even placing a trigger phrase in her mind to unleash her powers on command. His relationship with Rex Goodwin, a powerful official, is defined by blackmail, as Divine knows the secret of Goodwin's origins and uses it to protect himself from authorities. His mask of civility completely drops as he becomes obsessed with using Akiza's full power to resurrect his destroyed organization, ultimately leading to his final confrontation and defeat.

As a psychic duelist, Divine has several notable abilities. Unlike many other psychic duelists who struggle to control their powers, he is shown to be in complete command of his at all times. He can manifest his Duel Monsters as real, tangible beings that can cause physical harm to his opponents outside of a formal duel, using attacks like Hinotama as real fireballs. He is also a formidable strategist in the card game itself, piloting a Psychic-Type deck that focuses on summoning powerful Synchro Monsters such as Thought Ruler Archfiend at the cost of his own Life Points. Perhaps his most insidious ability is his psychological manipulation, which is so profound that he can effectively control the minds of others through trigger phrases and emotional exploitation.
