Description
Brave, known in the Japanese version as "Broder," is a professional duelist and a key member of Team Ragnarok, appearing in the final arc of the series. Before becoming a duelist for the World Riding Grand Prix, Brave lived a life as a globe-trotting treasure hunter, searching the world for riches and adventure. His path changed forever when he discovered a group of orphaned children who had been left for dead as casualties of a war instigated by the malevolent organization known as Yliaster. Taking responsibility for their care, he swore to find a way to protect them and stop Yliaster from causing further suffering. This protective instinct over vulnerable children is a core motivator for him and a significant parallel to Crow Hogan, a member of Team 5D's who similarly cares for a group of orphans.
Driven by this goal, Brave joined Harald and Dragan on a quest to find the three Polar God cards. When they located the card of Loki, Brave attempted to steal it and escape via boat. During the chase, his boat was sent crashing toward a deadly rock formation, but at the last moment, a mysterious Rune Eye manifested on his eye, and a bolt of lightning destroyed the rocks, saving his life. Harald recognized that Loki had chosen Brave, and from that moment, he accepted his destiny and joined forces with the other two to form Team Ragnarok.
In terms of personality, Brave is a stark contrast to the stoic Harald and the intense Dragan. He is an archetypal trickster, which befits his role as the inheritor of Loki, the Norse god of mischief. He is described as a "trickster" in dueling, often outsmarting his opponents with cunning plays and psychological tactics. He has a playful, confident, and sometimes flamboyant demeanor, appearing to treat duels as a form of entertainment. However, this lighthearted facade hides a sharp strategic mind and a fierce determination to win for the sake of the children he left behind. Despite his initial reluctance to ally with Team 5D's due to the will of the Polar Gods, he ultimately sets aside these differences to help in the final battle against Yliaster.
Brave's role in the story is primarily as a rival and a temporary obstacle for the protagonists during the WRGP finals. When Team Ragnarok faces Team 5D's, Brave demonstrates his exceptional skill. After his teammate Dragan falls to Jack Atlas, Brave steps in and defeats Jack. He then faces Crow Hogan in a duel that highlights their similarities and mutual respect. His dueling style is characterized by the use of "Nordic Alfar" monsters, which are based on elves from Norse mythology. Using their abilities, he quickly performs a Synchro Summon to bring out his signature card, "Loki, Lord of the Aesir". Unlike a straightforward power duelist, Brave relies heavily on a complex network of trap cards to control the field and protect his monsters, using Loki's effect to recycle these traps from the graveyard for continuous advantage. His duel with Crow ends in a dramatic draw after a double knockout, showcasing their equal resolve.
Key relationships for Brave include his bonds with his Team Ragnarok teammates, Harald and Dragan. While Brave initially betrayed them to steal Loki's card, the event led to his awakening, and he became a loyal and trusted comrade. His most significant relationship with an opponent is with Crow Hogan, as both share the same motivation of protecting children and a cunning, trickster-like dueling style. Over the course of their duel, Brave comes to respect Crow's dedication and sees a reflection of his own journey, which fuels his determination even further.
In terms of development, Brave begins as a selfish treasure hunter with no higher purpose, simply searching for riches. His encounter with the war orphans gives him a new goal, transforming him into a protector. His journey culminates in his acceptance of the power of the Polar Gods, initially for revenge, but ultimately for the protection of the future. After losing to Team 5D's, the Polar Gods allow Brave and his team to set aside their grudge. In the final battle against the Ark Cradle, Brave uses the power of his Rune Eye and his Duel Runner to help the Signers, showing his complete evolution from an independent treasure hunter into a hero willing to sacrifice himself for the world.
Brave's notable abilities extend beyond his dueling. He possesses the "Haglaz Rune Eye," a mark that grants him powers similar to the Signers' birthmarks. This eye allows him to see through illusions, perceive invisible objects like the floating Ark Cradle, and was shown to protect him from a temporal wave that altered history. On his Duel Runner, he is an agile and flashy rider, known to stand up while driving at high speeds simply to show off or maintain control, further reflecting his showy and confident personality.
