Description
Dr. Vellian Crowler, known as Cronos de Medici in the original Japanese version, is a professor at Duel Academy and the head of the Obelisk Blue dormitory. At 35 years old, he holds a prominent position within the school's faculty, serving as the department chair of techniques. His appearance is distinctive and somewhat flamboyant; he wears an elaborate variation of the Obelisk Blue uniform featuring gold trimmings and a ruffled pink collar. His blonde hair is styled in two layers, with the lower section pulled into a tight ponytail, and he accessorizes with crescent-shaped earrings. He carries an Academy-issued Duel Vest horizontally across his torso, which uses a motion sensor to automatically eject cards from his deck.

Crowler possesses a theatrical and prideful personality, demanding to be addressed by his title of Doctor, for which he claims to have a Ph.D. in dueling. He is easily slighted and becomes particularly irritated when students or others mistake him for a woman due to his clothing and hairstyle. In the English version of the anime, Crowler speaks with a vague British accent, while his Japanese counterpart speaks with a thick Italian accent, frequently exclaiming phrases like Mamma mia and Buongiorno. He has a noted dislike for Professor Lyman Banner's cat, Pharaoh, as he worries about the animal giving him rabies.

At the outset of the series, Crowler's primary motivation is to maintain the prestige of Duel Academy by forcing out lower-performing students, particularly those from the Slifer Red dormitory. After the protagonist, Jaden Yuki, defeats him in a duel during the entrance exams, Crowler becomes the initial antagonist of the story, obsessed with expelling Jaden to restore his own wounded pride and what he perceives as academic order. His schemes to achieve this are numerous and underhanded, including planting a fake love letter to catch Jaden trespassing, hiring a professional duelist named Titan to frighten Jaden, and enlisting the Paradox Brothers to defeat him in a tag duel.

Crowler's role in the story evolves significantly over time. During the first year, he is a comedic yet persistent obstacle for Jaden and his friends. In the second year, while Chancellor Sheppard is away, Crowler is appointed as interim co-head of the academy alongside Vice-Chancellor Bonaparte. Although the pair constantly bicker and devise questionable marketing schemes, Crowler often finds himself defending the Slifer Red dorm from Bonaparte's more aggressive attacks, marking the beginning of his shift in perspective. Crowler is also chosen as a guardian of one of the Spirit Keys needed to prevent the resurrection of the Sacred Beasts, demonstrating that despite his flaws, the Chancellor trusts him with a vital responsibility. During this conflict, he duels the Shadow Rider Camula and is turned into a doll, later being restored by Jaden's victory.

Key relationships drive much of Crowler's development. His relationship with Jaden Yuki transforms from bitter rivalry into grudging respect. While he devotes the first year to attempting to ruin Jaden, by the third year, he acknowledges Jaden's abilities and reliability. His interactions with other students also reveal his capacity for fairness; after dueling the student Chumley Huffington, Crowler honors his promise to recommend Chumley for a job at Industrial Illusions, impressed by the student's improvement even though Chumley lost the duel. His working relationship with Vice-Chancellor Bonaparte is defined by rivalry and reluctant partnership, as the two constantly try to outmaneuver each other while co-managing the school.

Crowler undergoes a notable character arc, moving from a petty antagonist to a respected, if still eccentric, authority figure. His most significant development occurs near the end of the series as Jaden's graduation approaches. Overwhelmed by sadness at the thought of his students leaving, Crowler reverts to his old, cruel personality, cancelling classes and forcing students to do pointless drills to prevent them from earning enough credits to graduate. Jaden confronts him in a duel, and Crowler admits he does not want the students to leave. This cathartic duel restores Crowler to his usual self, allowing him to finally let go and celebrate his students' growth and departure. He is last seen becoming emotional during his final speech to the graduating class, solidifying his transition from a strict professor to a caring mentor.

As a duelist, Crowler is highly skilled and specializes in an Ancient Gear deck, which focuses on Machine-type monsters. The primary strength of his deck lies in its ability to prevent opponents from activating Spell or Trap cards during the Battle Phase, forcing purely combat-based confrontations. His signature and most powerful monster is the formidable Ancient Gear Golem, and he later deploys an even more powerful fusion monster, Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem. His dueling style is methodical and aggressive, centered on summoning his large Golems as quickly as possible to overpower his opponents.
