Description
Chad Princeton, known in the original Japanese version as Jun Manjome, is a central character in the narrative of Duel Academy. He begins as an elite student from the prestigious Obelisk Blue dormitory but experiences a significant fall from grace that reshapes his entire outlook.
Born into the immensely wealthy and powerful Princeton family, Chad is the youngest of three brothers, with Slade and Jagger controlling vast financial and political empires. This family legacy places immense pressure on him to become the world's greatest duelist to uphold the Princeton name. Initially, Chad embodies arrogance and entitlement, looking down on students from lower-ranked dorms like Ra Yellow and Slifer Red. He relies on rare and powerful cards provided by the instructor Doctor Crowler, believing his family's influence guarantees his success.
Chad's journey is defined by a series of humbling defeats at the hands of Jaden Yuki. His initial loss shatters his ego, sending him into a spiral of confusion and frustration. To escape his failures, he transfers to North Academy, where he dominates the local duelists and earns the title of the school's king. However, a subsequent loss to Jaden forces a moment of crucial self-reflection. Upon being readmitted to Duel Academy, Chad is stripped of his elite status and forced to restart from the lowest rank, Slifer Red. This period marks the beginning of his most significant growth. It is also when he first connects with Duel Monster Spirits, specifically the comical and weak Ojama Yellow, who becomes an unlikely but loyal partner. Over time, he also bonds with Ojama Black and Ojama Green.
Despite his gruff exterior, Chad develops a genuine friendship with his former rivals, particularly Jaden and Syrus Truesdale. He also harbors a notable but often poorly expressed romantic interest in his fellow Obelisk Blue student, Alexia Rhodes. In one notable episode, his frustration over these feelings leads him to temporarily steal the Spirit Keys, forcing Alexia into a duel where he clumsily confesses his affection. This subplot highlights his struggle with vulnerability, contrasting with his usually proud demeanor.
Chad's role in the story is frequently that of a rival who must be redeemed. He is chosen as one of the seven Spirit Key holders, tasked with protecting the academy from the Shadow Riders. During the second year, his arrogance is exploited by the villain Sartorius. After a humiliating defeat, Chad falls under the influence of the Society of Light, adopting a white uniform and discarding his Ojama cards, which he now considers weak. In this brainwashed state, he becomes one of Sartorius's enforcers, defeating former allies like Bastion Misawa and Alexia. He is ultimately saved by Jaden, who uses Chad's own old deck and uniform to remind him of his true self, leading to a climactic duel where Chad reclaims his identity and wins the academy's GX tournament.
In the final season, Chad grapples with his professional future. Struggling to find a place in the pro leagues, he becomes an assistant to the professional duelist Aster Phoenix. Initially resentful of the menial work and demanding schedule, he eventually gains a deeper respect for Aster's dedication and sacrifices. Through a plot orchestrated by Aster's corrupt manager, Chad gets an unexpected opportunity to prove his skills, winning a high-profile duel and finally launching his own professional career.
Chad is notable for his wide variety of strategies, as he frequently overhauls his deck. Early on, he uses powerful combinations like the VWXYZ series of machine monsters and the Armed Dragon line. After bonding with the Ojamas, he integrates these disruptive, weak-looking creatures into his tactics, often combining them with his more conventional power monsters. During his time in the Society of Light, he employs a White Knight deck with ice-based themes. A constant across his strategies is a direct, aggressive playstyle focused on overwhelming firepower and strategic dismantling of the opponent's field.
