TV-Series
Description
Doyen Sheppard is the chancellor of Duel Academy, the prestigious school founded by Seto Kaiba where the series takes place. Physically, he is a bald man of average height and stocky build, with gray eyes. His typical attire consists of a wide purple uniform over an orange shirt, complemented by black pants and boots, with his Deck carried in a holster on his black belt.

In terms of personality, Sheppard embodies the qualities of a beloved and effective school headmaster. He is known to be a strict disciplinarian when the situation calls for it, yet also possesses a childlike enthusiasm for the game of Duel Monsters, often standing up and cheering during particularly exciting Duels. He is not above using lighthearted incentives, such as coveting a kiss from the school librarian, Ms. Dorothy, and offering it as a prize for winning competitions.

Sheppard's primary role in the story is as the leader of Duel Academy, responsible for the safety and education of its students. During the first year, he plays a crucial role in the conflict against the Shadow Riders, personally selecting seven individuals including Jaden Yuki, Zane Truesdale, Chazz Princeton, Alexis Rhodes, Bastion Misawa, Dr. Crowler, and Professor Banner to serve as the protectors of the seven Spirit Gates. When the Shadow Riders' leader, Kagemaru, arrives on the island, Sheppard is the first to recognize him as the school's superintendent. In the second year, Sheppard temporarily leaves his post to Dr. Crowler to go on a journey to invite powerful Duelists to the Genex Tournament. During this time, he confronts Zane Truesdale at a mountain monastery where Zane had trained as a child. The Duel between them was made with a wager: if Sheppard won, Zane would leave the mountain, but if Zane won, Sheppard would give him the most powerful cards of the Cyber Style legacy. Sheppard lost when Zane unveiled a new strategy, and he subsequently gave Zane his Genex Medallion to enter the tournament before returning to the academy near the end of the year to reclaim his position. In the third year, Sheppard expresses concern that his top student, Jaden Yuki, remains in the lowest-ranked Slifer Red dormitory. He hopes that the newly hired Professor Thelonious Viper will help push Jaden to continue growing as a Duelist. After the events of the third season, he decides to begin a search for the students who disappeared in the abandoned dorm. In the fourth year, Sheppard participates in the Duel Pair Tournament for graduating students, teaming up with Ms. Dorothy. They are ultimately defeated by the team of Jaden and Alexis. Later, while traveling by helicopter, he is attacked and defeated in a Duel by Makoto Inotsume as part of a plan to destroy the Cyber Style Dueling art. At the series' conclusion, he presides over the graduation ceremony, distributing diplomas to the departing students.

Sheppard has key relationships with several characters. He holds Dr. Crowler as a trusted faculty member, to whom he temporarily entrusts his position. He sees great potential in Jaden Yuki and is invested in his academic and personal growth throughout the series. His relationship with Zane Truesdale is particularly significant, as he is a mentor figure in the Cyber Style, and their duel on the mountain serves as a pivotal moment for Zane's character development. Sheppard also maintains a friendly rapport with Ms. Dorothy, the librarian.

His most notable ability is his proficiency with a Cyber Style Deck. While similar to the one used by his student Zane Truesdale, Sheppard's strategy is more indirect. Rather than focusing solely on strengthening his own monsters, his tactics revolve around turning an opponent's cards against them. Key cards in his arsenal include Cyber Ogre and its fusion evolution Cyber Ogre 2, both of which gain attack power during battle. He also utilizes cards like Cyber Shadow Gardna, a trap monster that can copy an opponent's monster's attack strength, and Scrap Fusion, which allows him to summon a Fusion Monster directly from the opponent's fusion deck.
