Description
Austin O'Brien is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. Known in the English dub as Axel Brodie, he is a transfer student who arrives at Duel Academy during the third year, hailing from the sister institution, West Academy. At the time of his introduction, he is seventeen years old and stands 175 centimeters tall.

O'Brien's background is distinct from that of a typical student. He is the son of a mercenary and was raised learning the art of survival in jungle terrain, a childhood that forged him into a capable and disciplined fighter. He carries himself with the demeanor of a soldier, viewing himself as a "dog of battle" who follows orders. This pragmatic and composed exterior, however, masks a strong personal code of honor that develops as the series progresses. He is characterized as a mature and reliable individual, though not one driven by impulsive heroism. His speech in the original Japanese version occasionally includes English phrases, and he uses the word "sōten" when sending monsters to the graveyard, an action he likens to dispatching them. He wields a unique, retractable Duel Disk designed to resemble a handgun, which he keeps holstered at his waist.

Initially, O'Brien is introduced as an agent working under Professor Thelonious Viper, who has employed him to test the abilities of the protagonist, Jaden Yuki. His mission is to engage Jaden in a special Dis-Duel, which serves Viper's secret agenda. During this duel, Jaden's unwavering spirit and determination remind O'Brien of one of his father's core teachings: that a warrior must protect his own life and fight with passion. This revelation causes O'Brien to betray Viper's orders, choosing to face Jaden on his own terms. After his defeat, he becomes suspicious of Viper's true intentions and begins investigating him, eventually turning against him and allying with Jaden and his friends.

Following these events, O'Brien is swept up in the crisis that transports the main cast to an alternate dimension. In this hostile world, his survival skills and calm, strategic mind prove invaluable, and he often takes charge of managing dangerous situations. A pivotal moment in his character arc occurs when Jaden succumbs to his inner darkness and becomes the despotic Supreme King. Initially, O'Brien is so overwhelmed by the Supreme King's terrifying power that he flees in fear, an act that brings him great shame. After regrouping and liberating a village from the Supreme King's forces, he rediscovers his courage. He confronts the Supreme King in a final duel, ultimately sacrificing himself to force a draw. This act of selflessness dispels the darkness within Jaden, allowing him to return to his normal self. O'Brien survives this ordeal and later resurfaces, having been hired by the Kaiba Corporation to investigate a new global threat known as Darkness.

In terms of relationships, O'Brien shares a significant bond with another transfer student, Jim Crocodile Cook, as the two often work together as a team. His relationship with Jaden Yuki is central to his story, evolving from that of a hired opponent to a trusted friend who ultimately helps save Jaden from himself. His primary motivation throughout the second half of the series is to atone for his moment of cowardice and to live up to the ideals of a true warrior as taught by his father.

As a duelist, O'Brien is known for using a Volcanic Burn deck, centered on Fire attribute monsters. His strategy revolves around the Blaze Cannon series of cards, which he uses to repeatedly launch his "Volcanic" monsters from his hand or deck to destroy the opponent's cards and inflict direct damage, mimicking the actions of reloading and firing a weapon. His signature and most powerful monster is Volcanic Devil, which combines field-clearing destruction with massive burn damage to the opponent's life points.
