Description
Pharaoh is a character in the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, where he appears as a light-brown cat belonging to Lyman Banner, the alchemy professor and advisor to the Slifer Red dormitory at Duel Academy. Banner regarded Pharaoh as a close companion and was rarely seen without him, even bringing the cat along to official school meetings. Because of this, Pharaoh became a familiar presence around the academy, particularly within the Slifer Red dorm, where he was often found at Banner's side.

In the early part of the series, the main character Jaden Yuki initially referred to the cat simply as a fat cat, a nickname that reflected his plump appearance. Over time, however, Jaden and the other students grew closer to him, and beginning in the second half of the first season, Jaden began calling him Pharaoh. This name eventually became the cat's established identity within the series and the dormitory community.

Pharaoh's personality is that of a loyal and affectionate companion. He shares a strong bond with Banner and remains a steady fixture of Slifer Red even after his owner's death. In contrast, Professor Vellian Crowler holds a pronounced dislike and fear of the cat, frequently claiming that Pharaoh has rabies or other diseases. This recurring reaction adds a comedic element to the story, as the calm and harmless cat repeatedly unsettles a faculty member who otherwise presents himself as authoritative.

Following Banner's death, Pharaoh takes on the role of the Slifer Red dormitory's superintendent, effectively inheriting his owner's position as caretaker of the dorm. In this capacity, he continues to watch over the students and remains an enduring presence in their daily lives. His role in the story is largely that of a companion figure and mascot for the dorm, providing a sense of continuity and comfort after Banner's disappearance.

His key relationships are defined by his connection to Banner, his growing closeness with Jaden and the Slifer Red students, and his strained dynamic with Crowler. His development is most visible in how he is perceived by others: he starts as an unnamed cat dismissed by Jaden, then gradually earns recognition and a proper name as the students come to appreciate him, and finally gains an official place within the academy as the dorm's superintendent.

As for abilities, Pharaoh is an ordinary cat without supernatural powers or any form of dueling role in the anime itself. Notably, the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Duel Academy video game includes a special event in which a Slifer Red student who has defeated Jaden Yuki, Syrus Truesdale, Chumley Huffington, and Lyman Banner at least three times can earn the chance to Duel Pharaoh. In that event, the outcome determines the card reward, with a win granting Panther Warrior, a loss granting Bone Mouse, and a draw granting Outstanding Dog Marron. Overall, Pharaoh serves as a loyal, quietly important figure within the Slifer Red dorm, symbolizing the bonds between Banner, the students, and the place they all call home.
