TV-Series
Description
Mai Valentine, known as Mai Kujaku in the original Japanese version, is a recurring character who first appears as a confident and ambitious competitor in the Duelist Kingdom tournament. Before the events of the series, Mai lived a solitary life. She worked as a card dealer on a cruise ship casino, where she became disillusioned with the wealthy, boring men who tried to win her attention. During this time, she developed her signature aroma tactics, spraying her cards with different perfumes to identify them without looking, creating the illusion of psychic powers. This strategy brought her many easy victories and financial gain, but it left her feeling empty. While working on the ship, she once defeated a man named Jean-Claude Magnum, who proposed to her; she refused and told him to return only when he became a better duelist.

At the beginning of her story, Mai is defined by her self-absorption and fierce independence. She enters tournaments primarily for prize money, personal satisfaction, and the pursuit of power. Her outward arrogance and willingness to use her beauty to manipulate men mask a deep and profound loneliness. She has convinced herself that she does not need friends, going so far as to believe that her Harpie Lady cards are the closest companions she will ever have. She typically speaks in an informal manner, often omitting honorifics, and her choice of words can come across as condescending, reflecting her guarded nature.

Mai's motivations evolve significantly after she meets Yugi Muto and his friends, particularly Joey Wheeler. Initially, her goal is simply to win and prove her superiority. However, her defeat at Joey's hands, where he sees through her aroma tactics, plants the first seed of change. She begins to care about the deeper meanings behind the game and starts to value the connections she is forming with others. This is a gradual process; she is initially reluctant to accept help, but after Yugi defeats the eliminator Panik and returns the star chips she had lost, she feels indebted to him and begins to open up.

Her role in the story is that of a rival who gradually becomes a trusted ally. During Duelist Kingdom, she shares her food with the group, declaring them friends for the night but enemies by morning. In the finals, she is paired against Yugi. Recognizing that Yugi is holding back and not taking her seriously, she pushes him to confront his own fears, ultimately surrendering when her beloved Harpie monsters are about to be destroyed. She later gives Joey one of her entry cards to prevent his disqualification, showing her growing loyalty.

During the Battle City tournament, Mai qualifies for the quarter-finals. Her key relationships are tested, especially with Joey. When Joey awakens from a coma and lies that she was not in his dream, Mai feels hurt and rejected. This triggers a regression to her old, solitary mindset. In her duel against Marik Ishtar, she is subjected to a brutal Shadow Game where each of her monster's destruction causes her to lose a memory of a friend. Marik exploits her loneliness, and despite taking a clear advantage and even stealing his Egyptian God Card, The Winged Dragon of Ra, she cannot use it because she cannot read the ancient text. She loses the duel and is mentally trapped, but the experience ultimately reaffirms the strength of the bonds she has made.

Her development continues as she struggles with the trauma of this event. She wins several minor tournaments on her own, but the victories feel hollow, and her fear of defeat and loneliness returns. This vulnerability leads her to join the villain Dartz and use the power of the Orichalcos, which makes her feel powerful and numb to her pain. However, Joey helps return her to her true self, and she recovers her self-esteem and pride as a genuine duelist.

Notable abilities include her mastery of a Harpie Lady deck, which she later supplements with Amazoness cards. Her original aroma tactics demonstrate a keen strategic mind and attention to detail. She is a skilled driver and a consistently high-ranking tournament competitor, placing in the top four at Duelist Kingdom and the top eight at Battle City. Her dueling philosophy holds a deep care for her monsters, as she would rather surrender than see her Harpie Ladies destroyed, reflecting her underlying sentimentality.
