Description
Duke Devlin, known in the original Japanese version as Ryuji Otogi, is a character from the manga and anime Yu-Gi-Oh!. He is a tall teenager with black hair worn in a long ponytail, often wrapped in a white or dark headband. His distinctive features include green eyes and a single dice-shaped earring hanging from his left ear. He typically dresses in a casual style consisting of a dark tank top or t-shirt underneath a red sleeveless jacket.
Duke is introduced as a highly intelligent and talented game designer, recognized as the genius creator of the tabletop game Dungeon Dice Monsters, which is known in the manga as D.D.D. (Dragon Dice & Dungeons). His family runs a game shop called the Black Clown, which serves as a direct rival to the Kame Game Shop owned by Yugi Muto's grandfather, Solomon Muto. This rivalry runs deeper than mere business competition. In the manga, Duke's father was once a student of Solomon Muto and challenged him to a forbidden game, the Devil's Board Game. After losing, Duke's father was cursed, his face was disfigured, and he aged rapidly. Duke was raised with the belief that his purpose was to avenge his father by defeating Solomon's grandson, Yugi, and claiming the Millennium Puzzle.
In the anime, Duke's motivation is slightly different. He had demonstrated his Dungeon Dice Monsters game to Maximillion Pegasus before the Duelist Kingdom tournament. When Pegasus was defeated by Yugi and subsequently vanished, Duke refused to believe a fair player could beat Pegasus and accused Yugi of cheating. He swore revenge against Yugi, believing him unworthy of the title King of Games.
Duke transfers to Domino High School and quickly becomes popular among the students, impressing crowds, particularly girls, with his dexterity and skill in performing various dice tricks. This popularity and his arrogant, cunning demeanor put him into immediate conflict with Joey Wheeler. Duke easily defeats Joey in a series of confidence games and a rigged card bet, forcing Joey to become his servant and humiliating him by making him wear a dog suit. This cruelty prompts Yami Yugi to challenge Duke. Duke accepts but insists they play his own game, Dungeon Dice Monsters, rather than a Duel Monsters card game.
Despite his early advantage and mastery of the game's rules, Duke is ultimately defeated by Yugi. Through this defeat, he comes to recognize Yugi's genuine skill and honest character. Realizing his grudge was unfounded, Duke abandons his vendetta and reconciles with Yugi and his friends, becoming a trusted ally. After his redemption, his personality softens considerably. He remains confident and charismatic but sheds his earlier ruthlessness, showing himself to be a loyal and dependable friend with a good sense of humor.
Following his introduction, Duke becomes a recurring member of the main group. He participates in several major story arcs, including the Virtual World arc where he teams up with Serenity Wheeler and Tristan Taylor to defeat one of the Big Five. He also assists during the Waking the Dragons arc, often serving as a supporting player in duels alongside characters like Rebecca Hawkins. He develops a notable dynamic with Tristan, as the two become romantic rivals over Serenity Wheeler. Duke is openly confident and charming in his pursuit of her affection, which contrasts with Tristan's more hot-headed approach. This rivalry is mostly played for comedic effect, and the two eventually become good friends despite their bickering.
In terms of abilities, Duke is a master of games that involve probability and psychology. His signature talent lies in his expert manipulation and control of dice, which he often uses to perform impressive tricks or to gain an advantage in games. In Duel Monsters, he utilizes a Dice-themed deck focused on cards like Orgoth the Relentless and spells and traps that rely on dice rolls, such as Dice Dungeon and Dimension Dice. His strategic mind, honed by creating his own games, makes him a formidable and analytical player. He also works part-time at his family's cafe, the Black Clown, where he is known to be a popular and capable waiter.
