Description
Ryou Bakura is a significant recurring character who appears as a friend and classmate to Yugi Muto and his circle. He is distinguished by his pale skin, large brown eyes, and distinctive white hair that falls to his mid-back with pointed, downward-trailing spikes. He is the keeper of the Millennium Ring, an ancient artifact that houses a malevolent spirit. This dark entity, known as Yami Bakura or Dark Bakura, serves as his other self, creating a stark contrast to the cooperative bond between Yugi and his own other self, Yami Yugi. Yami Bakura is a malignant being who completely suppresses Ryou's soul whenever he takes control of their shared body.

Ryou is characterized by a polite, gentle, and somewhat socially awkward demeanor. In the original Japanese version, his speech is very courteous, using many honorifics. The English dub reflects this politeness by giving him a distinct British accent. He shares Yugi's deep passion for games, with a particular fondness for tabletop role-playing games like Monster World. Despite the constant danger posed by the spirit in his ring, Ryou remains deeply curious about its history and origins, which often leads him to keep the artifact close, inadvertently allowing Yami Bakura to continue possessing him. Before befriending Yugi, Ryou was a transfer student who moved schools frequently because, mysteriously, anyone who played games with him would fall into comas. This was later revealed to be Yami Bakura's doing, trapping the souls of his friends as a penalty for losing their games.

The motivations of the two selves could not be more different. Ryou Bakura's primary drive is a desire for friendship and to enjoy games with others without causing them harm. He carries a deep, personal sorrow as he lost his younger sister, Amane, in a car accident. He often writes letters to her in heaven, showing a tender and mournful side to his personality. In contrast, Yami Bakura is one of the series' most persistent and calculating villains. His ultimate motivation is to acquire the other six Millennium Items, including Yugi's Millennium Puzzle. By gathering all the items, he aims to unleash a great darkness upon the world. He is an ancient spirit, over three thousand years old, who is ultimately revealed to be the combined essence of the Thief King Bakura from ancient Egypt and the great evil god, Zorc Necrophades. His actions are driven by a millennia-old grudge and a desire for chaos and power.

Within the story, Ryou's role is often passive, as he is frequently sidelined or used as a vessel by his darker half. He joins the main group for many of their adventures but is often excluded from major conflicts in the anime's filler arcs, where his presence is greatly reduced compared to the original manga. Yami Bakura, however, serves as a major antagonist across several story arcs. He is present during the Duelist Kingdom tournament, where he traps his friends' souls inside Duel Monsters cards, forcing a Shadow Game with Yami Yugi. He later forms a treacherous alliance with Marik Ishtar during the Battle City tournament, where he duels Yami Yugi in the quarterfinals. He finally steps forward as the primary antagonist in the final season, Dawn of the Duel, where he traps Yami Yugi in a Dark Role-Playing Game that recreates the fall of ancient Egypt.

Key relationships define the dynamic of both characters. Ryou's most important connection is with Yugi's group, particularly Yami Yugi, who must constantly defend him from the spirit within. Ryou also has a complex relationship with Marik Ishtar, as their darker halves collaborate while their true selves are both victims of their respective Millennium Items. For Yami Bakura, his relationship with Ryou is purely parasitic; he views Ryou simply as a necessary host. His most significant rival is Yami Yugi, the Pharaoh Atem, whose memories and very existence are the primary obstacle to his plans.

Ryou Bakura shows little traditional character development, as his primary struggle is an internal battle for control over his own body, a fight he rarely wins. His most defining moment is his willingness to sacrifice himself by shattering a pair of loaded dice during the Monster World RPG to help his friends, demonstrating his inherent bravery and selflessness. Yami Bakura, however, is central to the series' development as he is the catalyst for the final arc, forcing the Pharaoh to confront his past. His story concludes when he is finally destroyed alongside Zorc within the Memory World, leaving Ryou free from his influence for the first time.

In terms of abilities, Ryou himself is a talented game designer, having created the scenarios for the Monster World RPG that his friends play. He also builds the Decks that Yami Bakura uses in competition, favoring themes centered on the occult, fiends, and grotesque monsters. His signature card is Change of Heart. Yami Bakura possesses vastly greater supernatural powers. He can initiate Shadow Games, which blur the line between game and reality, and inflict Penalty Games on those he defeats. He has an ability called Parasite Mind, allowing him to seal a fragment of his soul into an object or person, effectively ensuring his own immortality. As a duelist, he specializes in a destructive Occult Deck built around his signature card, Dark Necrofear, and the Destiny Board combo, which spells out F-I-N-A-L to achieve an automatic win. He is also an expert actor, capable of perfectly mimicking Ryou's personality to deceive his friends.
