Description
Mai Kujaku, known as Mai Valentine in some English adaptations, is a recurring character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga and anime. A highly skilled and fiercely independent Duelist, she is introduced as a participant in the Duelist Kingdom tournament. Standing 175 cm tall and born on November 20, she is 24 years old at the time of the story.
Mai's background is marked by loneliness. She spent much of her early life alone, in part due to her family moving frequently during her childhood and her parents being consistently occupied with their work. Before becoming a Duelist, she worked as a card dealer on a cruise ship casino. There, she used a deceptive strategy known as the aroma tactics. By spraying her cards with different perfumes, she could identify them without looking, creating the illusion of psychic powers and easily winning money from the wealthy men she played against. This period of her life, while financially successful, only deepened her distrust of others and hatred for people, leading her to quit out of boredom and disgust. It was during this time that she first acquired her signature Harpie Lady cards.
At the beginning of the series, Mai presents herself as a self-absorbed and ruthless individual whose only interests are prize money, personal satisfaction, and power. She uses her beauty and flirtatious nature to manipulate men, showing no shame in doing so, and genuinely believes she does not need friends, at one point considering her Harpie Lady cards to be the closest companions she would ever have. This cynical armor, however, is a direct result of her long-standing solitude. Her motivations for entering the Duelist Kingdom tournament are twofold: on the surface, she seeks the monetary reward to live a life of luxury, but on a deeper level, she hopes to rediscover the things she once cherished but has since lost.
Mai’s role in the story is that of a rival who gradually becomes a valuable ally to Yugi Muto and his friends. Her initial interactions with the group are antagonistic. She mocks their camaraderie and challenges Joey Wheeler to a duel, looking down on him as a weaker competitor. Her defeat by Joey, who saw through her aroma tactics, marks a significant turning point. Later, after she loses all her Star Chips to the eliminator Panik, Yugi and his friends come to her rescue. Yugi defeats Panik and returns her Star Chips, an act of kindness that shocks Mai and begins to thaw her icy exterior. She later offers Yugi some of her own Star Chips to help him progress in the tournament, and in the anime, she even surrenders a duel against Tea Gardner so Yugi can have them, showing the first signs of her changing heart.
Her key relationship is with Joey Wheeler. Their dynamic evolves from simple rivalry to a deep, if unspoken, bond. After her defeat by Joey, she finds herself cheering for him unintentionally and begins to open up to the entire group. This connection becomes central during the Battle City tournament. After Joey lies about dreaming of her, a hurt Mai isolates herself again and duels Marik Ishtar alone, ignoring her friends' support. Under the influence of Marik's Millennium Rod, she is subjected to a Shadow Game where each time her monster is destroyed, she loses a memory of a friend. As she teeters on the brink of defeat, Joey rushes to her aid, and his words break through Marik's power, restoring her memories and proving the strength of their bond. Despite this rescue, Mai parts ways with the group after the tournament, feeling she must ultimately move on her own path.
Mai's character development is a journey from isolation to connection and back to a hard-won self-reliance. In the Waking the Dragons anime arc, her old insecurities resurface. Despite winning smaller tournaments, she feels overshadowed by the accomplishments of Yugi, Kaiba, and Joey. Her fear of defeat and recurring nightmares of her Shadow Game with Marik make her vulnerable. This leads her to be recruited by Dartz, and she falls under the corrupting influence of the Seal of Orichalcos, believing it will give her the power she craves and that her friends had abandoned her. This arc forces her to confront her inner demons once more before she can fully reclaim her pride and self-esteem as a true duelist.
As a Duelist, Mai is known for her notable abilities and strategic mind. Her signature strategy is the aroma tactics, though she abandons it after it is exposed. Her decks are highly thematic. During Duelist Kingdom, she primarily uses a Harpie deck, featuring monsters like Harpie Lady and Harpie's Pet Dragon. For the Battle City tournament, she incorporates Amazoness cards into her strategy. She is a skilled and resourceful player, capable of adapting her tactics, as shown when she successfully steals Marik's Egyptian God Card, The Winged Dragon of Ra, using Amazoness Chain Master. While many of her victories occur off-screen, her ability to consistently reach the final stages of major tournaments, placing in the top four of Duelist Kingdom and the top eight of Battle City, confirms her high level of skill.
