Description
Emi Ogasawara is a professional ghost sweeper who serves as the primary rival to Reiko Mikami. She is a woman in her late twenties with dark skin, often seen riding a motorcycle, and runs her own competing exorcism business, the Ogasawara Ghost Sweeper Office. Her rivalry with Mikami dates back to their time taking the official Ghost Sweeper qualification test, where the final rankings placed Mikami in first, another colleague named Meiko Rokudo in second, and Emi in third. Mikami frequently teases her about this placement, but despite the competitive banter, Emi is considered one of the most powerful voodoo users in the field and is one of the few people Mikami acknowledges as a worthy opponent.

In terms of personality, Emi presents herself as a serious and level-headed professional, especially when compared to the more comically greedy and chaotic Mikami. She possesses a strong sense of common sense and often operates within the bounds of the law, frequently collaborating with the police. Her method involves using curses and witchcraft to frighten criminals and gangsters into confessing their crimes or turning themselves in. This contrasts sharply with Mikami's approach, which is primarily motivated by profit without much concern for the client's moral standing. However, Emi has a notable weakness for handsome men. She becomes infatuated with a character named Pete de Blado and will drop her usual serious demeanor to cling to him and attempt to gain his affection.

The core of Emis professional life is her rivalry with Mikami, but this relationship runs deeper than simple competition. While they constantly clash over clients and contracts, there is an underlying mutual respect. In moments of genuine crisis, such as when Mikami was believed to be dead, Emi was the one who remained composed and encouraged the others, demonstrating that she understands her rival better than most. Her own ghost sweeping office has employed several assistants over time. She successfully recruited Tadao Yokoshima away from Mikamis employ with the promise of a higher salary, though the job ended up being incredibly dangerous as his primary duty was to act as a bodyguard while she performed her rituals. She later hired a large, simple-hearted man named Taiga Torakichi, who possesses telepathic abilities that can create powerful hallucinations.

Emis abilities are rooted in witchcraft and curses rather than more conventional exorcism techniques. Her most powerful technique is the Spirit Body Annihilation Wave, a large-area energy wave capable of destroying multiple ghosts at once. The significant drawback of this technique is that it requires a three-minute magical dance to prepare, during which she is completely defenseless. This vulnerability forces her to rely on her assistants to protect her until the attack is unleashed. She is also capable of powerful curses, such as using an enchanted mud golem that takes on the target's form and attacks them, fueled by the target's own agony. This curse can be very powerful but carries the risk of backfiring if broken or shortening the casters lifespan if the targets emotional suffering is insufficient.

Emi has a notably darker past than most of the series' characters. She lost both of her parents at a young age, around ten years old, and after running away from the homes of relatives, she was forced to make a living as an assassin for hire, using her witchcraft to eliminate targets. During this period, she formed a contract with a dangerous demon named Belial, who would grant her thirteen seconds of freedom per day to return to a powerful form and fight for her. She carried significant guilt over this work, developing a habit of frantically washing her hands after completing a job. Her path changed when she encountered the ghost of a boy who comforted her, explaining that the criminals she killed were drug dealers and that their victims had passed on peacefully because of her actions. After this incident, she stopped killing and instead put her targets into comas, eventually leaving that life behind to become a legitimate ghost sweeper. This history explains her preference for working with the police and her reluctance to take requests from true criminals.
