Description
Emi Ogasawara is a prominent supporting character in Ghost Sweeper Mikami, serving as a rival ghost sweeper and the head of her own exorcism business, the Ogasawara Ghost Sweeper Office. She is a dark-skinned woman in her late twenties who specializes in voodoo and curses, a field that sets her apart from other exorcists who typically use more conventional spiritual techniques. While she and the protagonist Reiko Mikami are frequently at odds professionally, their relationship is complex, built on a foundation of grudging mutual respect and the understanding that they can depend on one another when a situation becomes truly dire.
Ogasawara possesses a much darker past than her rival. She lost both her parents at the age of ten, an event that forced her into a life of survival. From that young age until she was fifteen, she worked as an assassin for hire, a career she abandoned following a specific, undisclosed incident that changed her path. This history is also tied to a dangerous contract she once held with the powerful demon Belial. This difficult upbringing shaped her into a formidable and serious individual, contrasting with the more flamboyantly greedy Mikami.
In the story, Emi Ogasawara acts as a direct competitor to Mikami's Ghost Sweeper business, often butting heads over clients and contracts. The two are said to have met during the official Ghost Sweeper qualification tests, where Mikami placed first and Ogasawara placed third, a fact Mikami enjoys using to tease her. Despite their rivalry, they are frequently forced to cooperate or confront each other on cases, revealing a dynamic closer to that of reliable partners who understand each other's strengths. Ogasawara is also notable for her romantic pursuit of a handsome character named Pietro de Bloodeau, and she will use any opportunity to approach him, which sometimes leads to her acting out of character or being manipulated, as seen when she was turned into a vampire by Count Vlad.
Her key relationships are primarily defined by her rivalry with Reiko Mikami, which is the engine for much of her screen time. She also has a pragmatic relationship with her employees; she requires tough assistants to protect her during her lengthy exorcism rituals. This led her to hire the powerful and loyal Torakichi Tiger as a bodyguard. She once attempted to recruit Mikami's assistant Tadao Yokoshima, tempted by a higher salary, but this arrangement was short-lived. Beyond the professional competition, Ogasawara's loyalty and trust in Mikami become evident in serious moments; when Mikami was temporarily killed during a battle with a major demon, Ogasawara was the one who remained composed and encouraged the panicking team, demonstrating the deep bond that exists beneath their constant bickering.
Ogasawara undergoes subtle development throughout the series. While she consistently maintains her professional exterior as a serious and capable exorcist, story arcs reveal her vulnerability and capacity for trust. Her past as an orphan and killer informs her no-nonsense attitude, but her interactions with Mikami and her employees show that she is capable of forming strong bonds. Her infatuation with Pietro, while played for humor, also reveals a more lighthearted and less guarded side to her personality.
Ogasawara's notable abilities revolve entirely around her mastery of voodoo and curses. Her signature and most powerful technique is the Reitai Gekimetsu Ha, or Spirit Body Destruction Wave. This ability allows her to unleash a large-scale energy wave capable of exorcising any spirit in its range. However, the technique has a significant drawback: it requires a lengthy preparation time, during which she performs a ritual dance for approximately three minutes. While executing this dance, she is completely defenseless and vulnerable to attack. Because of this weakness, she must rely on her assistants to protect her from physical or spiritual attacks until the exorcism is complete. She is also skilled in placing curses on targets, using magic circles and the power of anguish to create golem-like constructs that attack the target based on their own suffering. Later in the series, she also begins using a large boomerang as a physical weapon.
