TV-Series
Description
Joseph King, known in Japan as Koujirou Genda, is the goalkeeper for the Royal Academy, later for Royal Academy Redux and Neo Japan. He is often referred to by the nickname King of Goalkeepers. Physically, he is a tall player with spiky brown hair that is swept to the side and distinctive tattoo-like markings under his eyes.
His personality is defined by strong determination and confidence, though he can also be impatient and somewhat arrogant at times. He is generally a calm individual who takes his role as the last line of defense seriously. Despite his occasional pride, he is fundamentally a good person capable of forming strong bonds with his teammates. He maintains a close friendship with David Samford and shares a strong connection with Jude Sharp, the team's captain.
Joseph King's primary motivation is to protect his team's goal and to become stronger. After a humiliating defeat by the Zeus team that left him hospitalized, his desire for power led him to join the reformed Royal Academy Redux under the corrupt coach Ray Dark. This decision was driven by a difficulty in accepting defeat and a wish to surpass his former captain, Jude Sharp. Throughout his journey, he shows a capacity for redemption, recognizing his mistakes and reconciling with his original teammates.
In the story, Joseph King serves as a formidable rival goalkeeper. In the first season, he is the seemingly invincible keeper for Royal Academy, with his Power Shield technique posing a major challenge for Raimon. Following the team's loss to Raimon and a severe defeat by Zeus, he is sidelined due to injuries. In the second season, he returns as a key member of the Royal Academy Redux, where he uses the dangerous, forbidden technique known as Beast Fang, which damages the user's own body. He later helps Raimon train for their final matches. In the third season, he joins the select team Neo Japan, which aims to replace the national team, Inazuma Japan. As Neo Japan's goalkeeper, he showcases advanced techniques learned from other players.
His most significant relationship is with Jude Sharp, the captain and strategist of Royal Academy. He is a loyal follower of Jude's playmaking and supports him against the team's abusive coach. He is also very close to David Samford, with whom he joins Royal Academy Redux and trains intensively. Together with Samford, he demonstrates a willingness to use dangerous methods to gain strength, but both ultimately return to their original principles.
Throughout the series, Joseph King evolves from a proud, nearly unbeatable goalkeeper into a player who understands the limits and consequences of pursuing power recklessly. After using forbidden techniques and being part of a manipulated team, he recovers and continues to develop his skills legitimately, earning a spot on Neo Japan and ending the series on good terms with the main characters.
Joseph King possesses notable goalkeeping abilities, which are considered top-tier in the country. His signature techniques include Power Shield, a defensive wall that blocks shots; Full Power Shield, an enhanced version; and the forbidden Beast Fang, a powerful catch that harms the user. He later learns Drill Smasher and is also able to perform the combination technique Infinite Wall alongside other defenders. His playing style is characterized by an ability to cover any angle of the goal, making him a difficult keeper to beat.
