Description
David Samford is a prominent character known for his striking appearance and complex journey as a forward for the Royal Academy and later for the national team, Inazuma Japan. He is easily recognized by his long, straight silver-white hair, often described as reaching his shoulders, and his most distinctive feature, an eyepatch worn over his right eye. Beneath the eyepatch, his eyes are a notable shade of red or orange. His skin is often depicted as slightly tanned or dark. While he typically wears his team's uniform during matches, his casual attire includes a combination of gray pants, an orange shirt, and a white, green, and gray hoodie. In his early years at the Royal Academy, he wore the number eleven jersey, but later, as a member of Inazuma Japan, he is assigned the number sixteen.

David's personality evolves significantly throughout his story. Initially, as a key player for the prestigious Royal Academy, he is portrayed as arrogant, serious, and highly competitive, reflecting the team's dominating and cold demeanor under the influence of their coach, Ray Dark. However, this exterior masks a deep loyalty and a close friendship with his teammate, Jude Sharp. When Jude leaves the Royal Academy to join Raimon Junior High, David feels a deep sense of betrayal and abandonment. This feeling of being left behind makes him vulnerable, and his desire for more power and a chance to prove himself leads him down a darker path. Later, after recovering from his injuries and joining Inazuma Japan, his personality mellows considerably. He becomes more gentle, calm, and rational, showing a more cooperative and supportive side as he works to atone for his past actions and help his team succeed.

David's primary motivation is his devotion to football and his desire to stand alongside his best friend, Jude Sharp, as an equal. Initially, his fear of being weak or left behind drives him to seek power by any means necessary. After being hospitalized, his motivation shifts towards recovery and redemption. He is determined to overcome his past mistakes, help his former friend Jude uncover Ray Dark's sinister plans, and prove that he deserves a place on the national team. In his later role as a coach, his motivation is to guide the next generation of players at his alma mater.

In the story, David first appears as a star striker for the Royal Academy, known for his powerful shots and strategic play. After the team suffers a humiliating defeat by the Zeus Institute, he is recruited, along with his teammate Joseph King, by Caleb Stonewall to join a reformed and more dangerous version of the team, the Royal Academy Redux. Fueled by the promise of power and a desire for revenge against those who defeated them, David and Joseph learn forbidden techniques created by Ray Dark. In a match against Raimon, David uses his forbidden technique, Emperor Penguin No. 1, three times in a row. The technique's immense power severely damages his muscles, leading to his hospitalization. He remains on crutches for an extended period but eventually recovers thanks to advanced medical treatment. After his recovery, he participates in the trials for Inazuma Japan, the national team formed for the Football Frontier International. He is not initially selected but later joins the team as a replacement for an injured player. Once on the national team, his agility and tactical mind prove invaluable. He works closely with Jude and Caleb to perfect a new combination technique, Emperor Penguin No. 3, which they use to defeat the mysterious Team D and thwart Ray Dark's final schemes. Years later, in Inazuma Eleven GO, David has become the assistant coach of the Royal Academy, serving as the second-in-command to his old friend, Jude Sharp, who is the head coach.

His most significant relationship is undoubtedly with Jude Sharp. They are portrayed as best friends and formidable on-field partners who understand each other's playing styles perfectly. The feeling of betrayal David experiences when Jude leaves for Raimon is a central conflict in his story. Their reconciliation and eventual teamwork on Inazuma Japan form a key part of his character development. He also shares a strong bond with teammate Joseph King, as they go through the experience of the Royal Academy Redux and its consequences together. His relationship with Caleb Stonewall is complex, initially working with him on the Redux team and later collaborating with him and Jude to perfect a new hissatsu technique. David's character arc is one of redemption, moving from an arrogant and power-hungry player to a humbled and dedicated team member who overcomes a serious injury to contribute to his country's success.

David possesses several notable abilities as a footballer. He is known for his powerful shots and agility on the field. His most famous techniques are the Emperor Penguin series of shots, which are forbidden due to the physical toll they take on the user. His signature move is Emperor Penguin No. 1, which he uses despite its dangerous side effects. Other formidable techniques he masters include the combination shots Emperor Penguin No. 2 and Emperor Penguin No. 3, the latter perfected with Jude Sharp and Caleb Stonewall. He is also capable of using other solo techniques like Divine Arrow and Flaming Advance. In the video games, his stats reflect his role as a forward, with high ratings for kick and control, and his character profile notes him as Jude Sharp's ever-reliable right hand on the field.
