Description
Osamu Saginuma, also known by his Aliea Academy alias Desarm, is a character whose journey is defined by an intense hunger for strength and a deep-seated desire to prove himself on the soccer field. His background is rooted in the Sun Garden orphanage, a shared origin with many other players from the Aliea Academy, which shapes his initial worldview and motivations. As Desarm, he serves as the powerful and calculating captain and goalkeeper of the elite team Epsilon, where he is ruthless in his pursuit of victory, exiling his own teammates from Gemini Storm after their failure and leading his squad to overwhelming, aggressive victories that often leave opponents injured.

As a person, Saginuma is defined by his unwavering determination and a fierce, almost greedy ambition for power and recognition. This drive is most prominent during his time as Desarm, but it continues to fuel him even after his defeat. He is shown to be a hard worker who dedicatedly undergoes harsh training to improve. Despite a persona that can seem domineering, he possesses a capacity to accept his losses constructively, using them as motivation to become better rather than dwelling on the defeat. He struggles significantly with interpersonal communication and inspiration, most famously demonstrated when he writes an overly long and formally worded letter to the Inazuma Japan team hoping to encourage them, but instead only succeeds in making them feel depressed and exhausted.

His role in the story evolves dramatically from a primary antagonist to a determined rival and, eventually, a supportive peer. Initially the formidable captain of Epsilon, he stands as a major obstacle for Raimon Eleven, pushing them to new heights. After the Aliea Academy arc concludes and he is not selected for the national team, his motivation shifts from acquiring raw power to earning a legitimate place on the world stage. Frustrated by this exclusion, he personally pleads with Coach Hitomiko Kira to train him, leading to the formation of Neo Japan, a team of overlooked players whom he captains in a fierce challenge against Inazuma Japan for the national team spot. Although his team loses, he accepts the outcome and later demonstrates his growth by assisting in the training of other players, such as Midorikawa Ryuuji, showcasing a commitment to the positive and developmental aspects of soccer.

Saginuma has several key relationships that influence his path. His connection with Coach Hitomiko Kira is central, as he is the player who convinces her to return to coaching, and he remains dedicated to her rigorous training methods. He also shares a significant bond with other former Aliea Academy players like Hiroto Kiyama and Midorikawa, reuniting with them as equals after his antagonistic days are over. His rivalry with Endou Mamoru, the goalkeeper of Inazuma Japan, is a constant source of motivation, pushing him to switch positions from goalkeeper to forward just so he can directly challenge Endou's abilities.

Throughout the series, Saginuma shows notable development, transitioning from a power-hungry alien player to a passionate and more sportsmanlike competitor. In later storylines, such as in Inazuma Eleven GO, he further matures into an assistant coach for Seidouzan, acting as a mentor who encourages players from the sidelines and passing on his enthusiasm for the game. In the alternate timeline of Inazuma Eleven Ares no Tenbin, he is portrayed as the goalkeeper for Eisei Gakuen, where he employs psychological tactics to agitate opponents, although his performance is less dominant than his original counterpart. Later, in Inazuma Eleven Orion no Kokuin, he is selected as a versatile reserve player for Inazuma Japan, capable of filling multiple positions including goalkeeper, defender, and midfielder, with his flexibility and experience being his greatest assets.

In terms of notable abilities, Saginuma is highly talented and uniquely versatile, being one of the few characters to have played as a goalkeeper, forward, and midfielder at different points in the series. As Desarm, his signature techniques include Wormhole and Drill Smasher for goalkeeping, and Gungnir as a powerful shot when playing forward. After his transformation and training for Neo Japan, he develops upgraded versions of his moves, such as Illusion Ball Kai and Dash Storm V2, adapting techniques from other players and integrating them into his own playstyle as a midfielder. His style of play is characterized by meticulous planning, but he can become flustered when things deviate from his expectations. He is known to be at his best when facing tough opponents, with his hidden potential activating as his excitement and passion for the match reach their peak.
