TV-Series
Description
Dave Quagmire, also known by his alias Dvalin, is a prominent rival character in the Inazuma Eleven series. His original Japanese name is Osamu Saginuma, with Dvalin being the name he adopts while disguised as an alien. He is introduced as a tall, slender young man with dark, wavy hair often tied back, framing his face. His eye color is typically gray or orange, but shifts to red when he plays with the enhanced Epsilon Plus team. In later appearances, such as in Inazuma Eleven GO, his appearance changes to reflect his age, including a different hairstyle and a navy blue shirt with purple pants.
At his core, Dave Quagmire is an intensely determined and ambitious individual. His personality evolves significantly throughout the series. Initially, as a captain of the alien team Epsilon within the Alius Academy, he is portrayed as an arrogant and power-hungry antagonist who looks down on humans and craves strength. He is often displeased when events do not proceed exactly according to his plans. However, this persona is a facade. After his team's defeat, his genuine personality emerges: he is a responsible leader, a hard worker, and someone who can graciously accept defeat while striving to improve. His passion for football is described as limitless. Despite his positive traits, he is notably poor at encouraging others, once writing a letter to the Inazuma Japan team that was so long and detailed it inadvertently depressed them instead of inspiring them.
Dave Quagmire serves multiple roles and is the captain of several teams. In the second season, he is first seen as the captain and goalkeeper of the Alius Academy team Epsilon, and later of its evolved form, Epsilon Plus. His primary role is as a goalkeeper, but he is a versatile player who can also function as a powerful striker. In the third season, he becomes the captain and a midfielder for Neo Japan, a team of skilled players who challenge Inazuma Japan for the right to represent the country in the Football Frontier International tournament.
His motivations are driven by a desire for power and recognition. While with the Alius Academy, he seeks to prove his team's superiority and is afraid of failure, as a draw or loss means banishment for his team. By the time he forms Neo Japan, his motivation matures into a desperate longing to play football at an international level, having worked incredibly hard under the tutelage of his coach, Lina Schiller.
One of his most significant relationships is with the protagonist, Mark Evans. After an intense rivalry, Mark's unwavering spirit and strength inspire him, leading to a mutual respect and a handshake after their final match against Epsilon Plus. He also has a strong bond with his coach, Lina Schiller, who trains him and the Neo Japan team, pushing them to reach new levels of ability.
Dave Quagmire undergoes a clear character development from a villainous, alien-like figure to a respected rival and, eventually, a supportive ally. After his defeat with Epsilon, he refuses to give up on football. He dedicates himself to rigorous training, transforming from an arrogant antagonist into a determined and honorable competitor who fights for his chance on the world stage. His development continues into the Inazuma Eleven GO era, where he has become the assistant coach for the powerful Mount Olympus team, now working to guide and encourage the next generation of players.
In terms of notable abilities, Dave Quagmire is known for his powerful hissatsu techniques. As a goalkeeper, his signature blocking technique is Wormhole, which he uses to great effect with Epsilon. As a striker, his most famous offensive technique is Gungnir, a powerful shot that he uses to break through defenses. He later develops upgraded versions of his techniques, such as Gungnir Version 2 and Odin's Sword, the latter of which is powerful enough to initially overwhelm Mark Evans. As a midfielder for Neo Japan, he utilizes techniques like Ballista Phantasm Version 2 and Divine Wisdom Version 2, showcasing his tactical and technical growth. In the Inazuma Eleven GO timeline, he moves into a coaching role, helping to develop the skills of players on Mount Olympus.
