Description
Raiden Hijikata, also known simply as Raiden, is a supporting character in the anime Inazuma Eleven who appears during the alien invasion arc and later as a member of the national team Inazuma Japan. He is a junior high school student from Okinawa, where he plays for the local soccer club. He has a thick, muscular build and aubergine-colored hair with an orange flame-shaped streak running down the middle, and his adult-like appearance sometimes causes others to mistake him for someone who is not a student.
Hijikata lives in Okinawa with his five younger siblings, and he acts as their primary caregiver. This responsibility is so central to his life that he initially declines Endou's invitation to travel with the Inazuma Caravan, because he cannot leave Okinawa while his brothers depend on him. He is first encountered when Endou and Kidou arrive in Okinawa to investigate the Flame Striker, a player they believe can help them. Endou picks up a loose ball kicked by Hijikata's brothers, which brings Hijikata running toward them at full speed while wearing an apron. During this first meeting he demonstrates his technique Super Shikofumi against Kidou.
Hijikata is described as a southern power player with a big heart who excels at taking care of others, and while he can come across as a bit haughty, he is consistently a good teammate. He is bold, outspoken, and naturally suspicious of strangers. On meeting Kidou for the first time, he bluntly points out that Kidou's glasses look suspicious. This same cautious nature allows him to see through Burn, an alien agent attempting to infiltrate Raimon, because Hijikata recognizes that Burn is not a local. His protective and observant instincts also extend to his friends off the field.
Hijikata's role in the story centers on supporting Gouenji, the Flame Striker. When Gouenji is being hunted by authorities and alien agents, Hijikata hides him, since Hijikata's family and the detective Onigawara know each other. Hijikata later cooperates with Onigawara to trap the alien agents and help secure Gouenji's release, and his support contributes to Gouenji's recovery and the development of the technique Bakunetsu Storm. He also helps Gouenji deal with aliens who were threatening Gouenji's sister. Because of his family obligations, he is not able to join the Raimon group during the caravan, but he later accepts a place on Inazuma Japan for the Football Frontier International tournament, where he plays as a midfielder and defender. His technical profile remains close to that of a defender even after becoming a main member.
