Description
Kidou Yuuto was orphaned at a young age alongside his younger sister, Haruna Otonashi, after their parents died in a plane crash. As children, he often protected her and found a connection to his father through an old soccer magazine, which inspired him to start playing the sport. At the age of six, his talent was recognized by Kageyama Reiji, who arranged for him to be adopted by the Kidou Financial Group. This adoption separated him from his sister, who was taken in by the Otonashi family. To secure the right to reunite with Haruna, Kidou made a deal with his adoptive father: he would win three consecutive national championships in the Football Frontier during his junior high years. This pact forced him to cut off contact with his sister, leading her to believe she was a burden, though his actions were always meant to protect her and ensure their future together.
Initially introduced as the captain and ace striker of Teikoku Gakuen, Kidou was a shady and haughty figure, acting as a loyal subordinate to Kageyama. He earned the title of Genius Game Maker for his exceptional tactical brilliance and logical mind, capable of analyzing opponents and devising complex strategies. He wears distinctive goggles, a gift from Kageyama, which help him focus on the ball's trajectory. His original uniform included a red cape. After witnessing Kageyama's unethical and manipulative behavior, he began to question his mentor and eventually rebelled. Following a crushing defeat for Teikoku, Kidou transferred to Raimon Junior High, changing his cape to blue as a symbol of his new path. Initially met with distrust by the Raimon team, including his own sister, his strategic genius and genuine care for others helped him earn their acceptance, and he became a key midfielder and strategist for the team.
Kidou's primary motivation throughout the story is his deep-seated care for his friends and, most importantly, his sister. He is driven to atone for his past actions under Kageyama and to protect those he cares about. His relationship with Endou Mamoru, the heart-driven captain of Raimon, is particularly significant, as Endou's unwavering and passionate soccer philosophy helps Kidou break free from the cold, results-only mentality instilled by Kageyama. His bond with his sister, Haruna, is a constant emotional core, as he works to repair their relationship and protect her from harm. His former teammates from Teikoku, Sakuma Jirou and Genda Koujirou, also remain important to him, and he is later challenged by his complex rivalry with Fudou Akio, who takes on a similar strategic role. His relationship with Kageyama is the most fraught; he struggles with being seen as Kageyama's greatest creation and fears he can never escape his influence.
Kidou's development is marked by his journey from a tool of a corrupt system to an independent and principled leader. He goes from a cold, obedient strategist to a warm, loyal team player who uses his intelligence to empower others. A significant part of his growth involves confronting his past with Kageyama, eventually accepting that his skills are his own and that he has forged a new, positive path through the soccer he plays with his friends. In the Inazuma Eleven GO series, set ten years later, Kidou has matured into a calmer, more grounded figure. He initially serves as a commander for his old school, Teikoku, before becoming a trainer and temporary coach for Raimon. His coaching style is stern but effective, focused on unlocking the potential of each player, and he serves as a strategic counterbalance to Endou's idealism. He later coaches El Dorado Team 01 in the Chrono Stone arc and appears as a midfielder for Inazuma Legend Japan in the crossover movie. In the alternate timeline of Ares no Tenbin and Orion no Kokuin, he continues to play as a midfielder for Seishou Gakuen and Inazuma Japan, demonstrating his enduring skill and leadership across different versions of the story.
Kidou is a midfielder known for his tactical passing and powerful hissatsu techniques. His signature individual techniques include Illusion Ball and its evolved form, True Illusion Ball. He is famous for his combination moves, particularly the Emperor Penguin series. Emperor Penguin No. 2 is performed with two teammates, and Emperor Penguin No. 3 is a more powerful version he develops with Sakuma and Fudou. Other notable combination techniques include Twin Boost, Inazuma Break (with Endou and Gouenji), and Death Zone (with Endou and Domon).
