Description
Kei Kunieda cultivates two sharply contrasting identities. Publicly, he embodies a popular, charming, and impeccably dressed television newscaster, projecting professionalism and reassurance. This persona relies on a carefully honed speaking voice, refined through self-recording and research to ensure auditory appeal. Outwardly, he exhibits consistent patience and kindness, calming crew members during mishaps and declining social engagements with polite excuses.

Privately, he harbors a grumpy, sarcastic, and critical internal monologue, mentally disparaging colleagues while considering himself the most attractive person at work. To physically demarcate these selves, he changes into inexpensive, comfortable attire—a supermarket sweatsuit from his mother, non-prescription glasses, a medical mask, and worn tennis shoes—during non-working hours. This disguise facilitates anonymous nighttime walks, serving as a decompression ritual from upholding his public facade.

His lifelong separation of inner and outer worlds is noted by his mother, who feels guilt when neighbors praise his televised persona against his private behavior. She questions whether he has found a partner accepting his true nature. Past relationships were brief and transactional; he treated partners as accessories to enhance his public image, ending connections amicably to avoid negative perception and preserve relaxation time.

A bicycle accident during an anonymous walk sparks an encounter with animator Ushio Tsuzuki. Fearing recognition, Kunieda adopts the alias "Owari" and assists Tsuzuki with work. Tsuzuki perceives "Owari" as distinct from the newscaster. Developing genuine feelings for Tsuzuki, Kunieda becomes ensnared by his deception, juggling conflicting identities. Tsuzuki eventually uncovers the duality but accepts both personas, initiating a romantic relationship. This acceptance encourages Kunieda to integrate his selves and confront anxieties, symbolized by routines like ordering identical takeout meals and carrying a bookmarked pronunciation dictionary as a comfort object.

Their relationship progresses to physical intimacy, though Kunieda withdraws consent during one encounter, pleading repeatedly for Tsuzuki to stop. Tsuzuki disregards these objections. Beyond their initial reconciliation, the narrative shows Kunieda gaining emotional strength through the relationship and advancing toward self-acceptance. Post-credits scenes introduce new characters, indicating ongoing story potential.
