TV-Series
Description
Hime Makita is a student in the same class as the protagonist, Saku Oyagi. She becomes a central figure in the story through her unspoken romantic feelings for him. Her initial encounter with Saku was brief but significant, occurring on a bus as they were both traveling to take their high school entrance exams. This meeting left a lasting impression on her, so she is surprised and delighted to discover he is in her class when the school year begins. This pre-existing interest is the primary catalyst for her actions throughout the series.
In terms of personality, Hime is generally presented as a calm and collected young woman. However, this exterior often masks a more volatile and easily flustered interior. Her most prominent trait is her intense jealousy, which is almost exclusively directed at her classmate and fellow club member, Mihoshi Akeno. She perceives Mihoshi, who has a boisterous and physically affectionate relationship with Saku from their shared childhood, as her main rival for his attention. This jealousy can manifest in comical frustration, though it also reveals a deeper insecurity about her own standing with him. Despite her romantic aspirations, she is easily put off by the advances of other boys, showing that her interest is very specifically focused on Saku. While she can be somewhat blunt, she is consistently portrayed as having a good heart and her feelings, though sometimes misguided, are sincere. A notable physical characteristic is that her hair becomes frizzy in high-humidity weather, a trait so predictable that her sister uses it to gauge the humidity level in the air.
Hime’s primary motivation is to get closer to Saku and ultimately win his affection. After she witnesses him joining the astronomy club, she quickly follows suit, even though she shares none of Mihoshi’s passionate interest in stargazing. Her decision to join is a calculated move to spend more time with him and create opportunities for their relationship to develop. This decision places her at the heart of the story's main social group and sets up the central romantic tension.
Regarding her relationships, the most dynamic and important is her rivalry with Mihoshi. Hime views Mihoshi not just as a friend but as a direct competitor. This rivalry is driven by Hime’s perception that Mihoshi and Saku share a closeness she cannot easily penetrate. In a key moment of character development, this antagonistic feeling evolves into a more complex respect. During a dangerous blizzard in a mountain outing, Hime gets lost. Mihoshi bravely goes out alone to find her, leading to a heartfelt reconciliation where Hime admits she is happy to have Mihoshi looking out for her. She declares that she will not give up on Saku and asks Mihoshi to acknowledge her as a rival, a challenge that Mihoshi accepts, solidifying their bond as friends and competitors. Her relationship with Saku is defined by her unrequited feelings. She makes several attempts to confess to him, but these moments are often interrupted or misunderstood. In one instance, she believes she has confessed her feelings, but due to a chaotic series of events involving Saku’s fear of frogs, he does not actually hear her confession, leaving her romantic progress perpetually stalled.
Throughout the story, Hime demonstrates a surprising resilience and inner strength that goes beyond her jealous exterior. When she is lost in the snowstorm, she refuses to give in to despair, fiercely telling herself that she is just getting started in life. This moment reveals a core of defiance and determination that is not always visible in her day-to-day school life. While she has no special abilities related to astronomy or athletics, her notable trait is her fierce, if often awkward, determination to pursue what she wants. She is willing to put herself in uncomfortable situations, such as joining a club she has no interest in, and endure the emotional pain of watching her crush interact with another girl, all for the slim chance of getting closer to him. Her character arc moves from being a purely reactionary figure driven by jealousy to someone who actively defines her own position as a rival and asserts her own will.
