Description
Mansairaku is a character from the anime Otogi Zoshi. He is introduced as a professional feudal Japanese dancer, likely practicing a style related to sarugaku or Noh, who travels across various provinces to perform. His appearance is striking, with long red hair and blue eyes, often dressed in ornate and somewhat androgynous attire. His personality is generally calm and peace-loving, though he sometimes experiences loneliness due to his wandering lifestyle. He first crosses paths with the protagonist Minamoto no Hikaru when she is washed ashore on an island and attacked by enemy soldiers; Mansairaku rescues her, and their connection deepens over time. Hikaru develops romantic feelings for him, and they share a gentle bond that contrasts with the violent conflicts around them.

Beneath this gentle exterior lies a hidden identity. As the story progresses, it is revealed that Mansairaku is actually the onmyoji Abe no Seimei, the very figure who originally tasked Hikaru with recovering the five magatama. Disillusioned with the corruption and suffering in the capital, Seimei orchestrates a plan to use the magatama to create a circle of Enmity, aiming to destroy the current capital so that it might be reborn and saved from its decay. This revelation turns Mansairaku into the central antagonist of the Heian chapter. Despite his love for Hikaru, he remains resolute in carrying out his destructive plan, believing it is the only way to purify the land. In the climactic confrontation, Hikaru must face the man she loves, and the tragedy of their relationship is underscored by his inability to stop even when she pleads with him.

In terms of development, Mansairaku transitions from a mysterious and kind traveler to a tragic antagonist whose motivations are rooted in a desire to heal a broken world. His role in the story is twofold: he serves as Hikaru’s romantic interest and as the primary obstacle she must overcome. Their relationship is the emotional core of the series, and his eventual fate is tied to her final act of breaking the magatama with her flute, which ends the spell and causes both their souls to ascend together.

In the later Tokyo Chapter of the series, Mansairaku reappears in a different context, reflecting on his past actions and guarding the city against ancient evils. He is depicted as a more introspective figure, having gained perspective from the events of the Heian era. His notable abilities include his skill as a dancer, which may carry ritualistic or performative significance, and as Abe no Seimei, he possesses formidable onmyodo magic, allowing him to manipulate spiritual forces and enact large-scale rituals. He is a deeply conflicted character, driven by love and a tragic sense of duty, whose choices ultimately shape the fate of the capital.
