Description
Minamoto no Hikaru is the central protagonist of the anime Otogi Zoshi, which is divided into a Heian period story and a modern-day Tokyo story. In the Heian chapter, she is the youngest daughter of the prestigious Minamoto clan, one of the six noble families of ancient Japan. When her older brother, Minamoto no Raikou, a renowned samurai leader, is struck down by a severe epidemic and barely able to move, Hikaru is secretly assigned by her father to take his place. She disguises herself as her brother and embarks on a quest to retrieve the five sacred magatama jewels representing the elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, following the orders of the onmyoji Abe no Seimei. Her initial motivation is to heal her dying brother, but the mission grows into a larger struggle to save the capital of Kyoto from famine, plague, and destruction.

Hikaru is portrayed as a young woman with short black hair and gray eyes. Her personality reflects great kindness toward others, and she dislikes harming anyone unless forced to do so. She is determined and strong-willed, unafraid to stand up against injustice despite her position as a noblewoman bound by the rigid social norms of the Heian era. She is not constrained by these norms and is willing to fight for what is right. She is also a highly skilled archer, regularly wielding a bow and arrow as her primary weapon, and she uses her archery skills to protect her companions on their missions. Additionally, Hikaru is a miko, a Shinto priestess, and possesses supernatural abilities, including the ability to see and communicate with spirits.

Her motivations are deeply rooted in loyalty to her family and her duty to the capital. She continues onward in the name of the capital to retrieve the magatamas, even after her brother dies just before she returns with the first jewel. She is greatly saddened by his death but remains determined to complete the quest. Throughout her journey, she is supported by trusted retainers and allies. Watanabe no Tsuna, a one-eyed swordsman who was her brother's adjutant, vows his life to protect her and accompanies her from the beginning. She later meets and recruits Usui Sadamitsu, a skilled bowman; Urabe no Suetake, a sorceress or fortune-teller; and Kintaro, a prodigious young wild-child with immense strength. These four are based on the legendary Four Guardians of Minamoto no Raikou. Hikaru also encounters the beautiful young man Mansairaku, a sarugaku performer, with whom she develops a deep romantic attachment. She also crosses paths with the mysterious onmyoji Abe no Seimei, who seems to be manipulating events from behind the scenes.

Hikaru's role in the story is crucial. She is involved in many of the key events and battles of the series. She retrieves the magatama of Earth from the Tsuchigumo clan, the magatama of Water from a man named Torakuma, and finally the magatama of Fire from the demon Shutendouji. After collecting all five magatamas, she learns that Abe no Seimei has evil intentions and plans to use them to create a circle of Enmity to destroy the capital in order to save it. In the climactic confrontation, Hikaru discovers that Abe no Seimei and Mansairaku are the same person. She is torn between her love for Mansairaku and her duty to stop the destruction. She tries to shoot him with an arrow but is held back by her feelings. Ultimately, she plays her flute, a sound that Mansairaku always loved, and accidentally breaks the magatama of Fire, ending the spell. As a result, both Hikaru's and Mansairaku's souls ascend to heaven.

Key relationships include her bond with her brother Raikou, whose death deeply affects her; her loyalty to Tsuna, who remains her steadfast protector until his own death in battle; her romantic connection with Mansairaku, which is the emotional core of the story; and her camaraderie with Sadamitsu, Urabe, and Kintaro, who stand by her until the end. Urabe dies while revealing Seimei's true intentions, and Tsuna is fatally wounded protecting her in the final battle, entrusting his lord's wishes to her with his dying words.

In the Tokyo chapter, set in modern-day Tokyo, Hikaru is reincarnated as a high school student and the landlady of an apartment building called Minamoto Heights. Her tenants include reincarnations of her former companions: Tsuna as a freelance photographer writer, Urabe as a fortune-teller, Sadamitsu as a scout, and Kintaro as a young boy. Her brother Raikou has been missing for a year, and she sees him amidst a crowd, setting off a new chain of events. Ancient evils manifest, and the capital is once again threatened with destruction. Hikaru and her party, along with Mansairaku, join forces to restore the circle of Affinity and save Tokyo. After putting right the ancient wrongs, Mansairaku vanishes, and Hikaru's brother returns.

Throughout the series, Hikaru undergoes significant development. She grows from a sheltered noble girl who takes on her brother's identity out of familial duty into a confident leader and skilled warrior who makes difficult choices that test her loyalty and bravery. She remains firm in her beliefs and committed to her duties as a miko and a member of the Minamoto clan, and her determination and strength of character make her a compelling protagonist. Her notable abilities include exceptional archery skills, spiritual perception enabling her to see and communicate with spirits, and the ability to play the flute, which holds emotional significance in her relationship with Mansairaku.
