Description
Mamoru Zaitsu is a 14-year-old middle school student who attends the same class as Ayumi Arihara and her friends. He has short black hair and blue eyes, and is often described as having a cheerful and approachable demeanor. His most defining trait is his dream of becoming a paramedic, which drives him to act quickly and responsibly whenever someone is in need of medical assistance. This aspiration, combined with his kind nature, leads him to carry a collapsed Ayumi to the nurse's office in a princess-carry style, an act that instantly wins her affection. Despite being in the same class, Ayumi initially does not realize that Mamoru is the younger brother of Misao Zaitsu, a towering and intimidating high school student who has confessed his love to her.
Mamoru’s personality is generally warm and polite, but he becomes noticeably irritable when he is hungry. He is a member of the art club and is seen as the prince of his school due to his good looks and gentlemanly behavior. However, he is not without insecurities; he is somewhat taken aback by Ayumi’s intense feelings and initially believes she is more fearsome than she appears. His own romantic interest lies elsewhere: he harbors a crush on Misaki Yamamoto, his neighbor and a high school girl. This unrequited affection causes him to struggle with expressing his feelings honestly, and after being turned down by Misaki, he runs away with his friends Kusuda and Sogabe.
In the story, Mamoru serves as a central figure in a love triangle involving Ayumi and his brother Misao. Ayumi is torn between her crush on Mamoru and Misao’s sincere confession, while Mamoru remains focused on Misaki. His role highlights the complexities of first love and the difficulty of navigating multiple, sometimes conflicting, emotions. Over the course of the series, Mamoru’s character develops as he confronts his own shyness and learns to be more direct about his feelings, though his primary goal of becoming a paramedic remains a steady motivator.
Notably, Mamoru’s ability to take charge during medical emergencies and his calm, authoritative manner in such situations set him apart from his everyday cheerful self. He is also recognized for his strong sense of responsibility, which earns him the admiration of those around him, particularly Ayumi. His relationship with his brother Misao is characterized by a contrast in appearance and temperament, but the two share a bond as siblings. Ultimately, Mamoru’s journey in Hatsukoi Limited is one of self-discovery and the awkward yet earnest pursuit of love and personal aspiration.
