TV-Series
Description
Misao Zaitsu is a high school student in Hatsukoi Limited. He is sixteen years old, stands 194 centimeters tall, and has a large, intimidating physique with a face that others describe as monstrous. This appearance causes nearly everyone who sees him or knows his name to fear him, with the sole exception of his childhood friend and neighbor, Misaki Yamamoto. He is a capable fighter and has acquired many enemies due to his fearsome reputation.
Despite his threatening exterior, Misao is unexpectedly shy. He struggles to express his feelings verbally, which leads him to write his confession of love on a note rather than speaking it aloud. He cannot even bring himself to say the name of the girl he likes. His gentleness and good intentions are hidden behind his fierce looks, creating a contrast that defines his character.
Misao’s role in the story begins when he falls in love with Ayumi Arihara after seeing her photograph in his younger brother Mamoru’s class pictures. He sends Ayumi a confession letter, which both frightens and perplexes her. When Ayumi makes it clear that his appearance scares her, Misao decides to watch over her from a distance rather than pursue her directly. This selfless decision shows his consideration for her feelings.
Key relationships shape Misao’s journey. His bond with Ayumi is central: he genuinely cares for her and wants her happiness, even if it means stepping back. His relationship with his younger brother Mamoru evolves into a rivalry when Ayumi develops feelings for Mamoru. Misao accepts Ayumi’s confession that she must choose between the two brothers and acknowledges Mamoru as his rival. His friendship with Misaki Yamamoto is notable because she is the only person who does not fear him, indicating a long-standing trust.
Misao undergoes development from a figure of terror to a person capable of understanding romantic complexity. Initially seen only as a monster, he learns to respect Ayumi’s autonomy and to confront his own shyness. By the end of the story, he accepts the possibility of rejection and stands ready to compete fairly for her affection.
His notable abilities are his physical strength and combat prowess, which contrast sharply with his inner timidity. This juxtaposition of outer menace and inner softness is the defining trait that drives his character arc.
